Jimmy Fallon and Shailene Woodley Play ‘Pumpkin Time Bomb’ [Recap]

Jimmy Fallon

On The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, the first guest of the show was actress Shailene Woodley (Insurgent, White Bird in a Blizzard). Fallon later played the game Pumpkin Time Bomb with her, a perfect game for this time of the year. Jimmy’s second guest of the night was actor Michael Shannon. His musical guest was the country western musician, Eric Church. At the end of the Tonight Show, Church sang a song off of his latest album The Outsiders.

Host of the Tonight Show, Jimmy Fallon, began Wednesday’s episode by welcoming his audience to the show. Then, he performed his monologue, joking about news items of the day. “Welcome to the Tonight Show! Joe Biden is at it again. In South Carolina he met with African American ministers he’s the only white boy on the East Side of Wilmington.”

Next, Fallon said “During a recent interview, Senator John McCain said we’re not winning the war against ISIS. Even ISIS said, ‘Not with that attitude.'”

Jimmy said “This isn’t good. Earlier this week, a cowboy NFL running back, Joseph Randle, was arrested for shoplifting cologne and a two-pack of underwear. What’s even sadder is that he couldn’t outrun a security guard.”

After that, Fallon said “The marriage rate is hitting an all-time low. They even hired an ad firm. ‘Marriage: Look how happy your parents turned out,’ was one of their slogans, and ‘Marriage — because happy people are annnoying.'”

“Tonight, Saturday Night Live‘s Lenny Picket is sitting in with the house band, The Roots. Last week, we made the video Ew! with will.i.am. Billboard called — Ew! is the number 26 song!” Jimmy Fallon said. “That is insane! that is absolutely the craziest thign! That means Ryan Seacrest is forced to play that song, whether he wants to or not!”

Then, Jimmy showed a super-cut of Ew!, featuring fans lip-syncing to the song. It was pretty great! “Thank you very much, everyone! Number 26 on Billboard! Sting will be here tomorrow, and on Friday, Bradley Cooper will play Russian Roulette and Neil Diamond will sing! Tonight, Shailene Woodley is here, actor Michael Shannon and our musical guest is Eric Church!”

Jimmy Fallon showed a video of himself supposedly blowing off steam and break dancing, having a dance-off with Brad Pitt on the roof of the building. Of course, Fallon’s face was not seen as he took break dancing to a whole ‘nother level. Then, he and Brad Pitt did a break dance together! It was very cool-looking. Brad is starring in the war movie, Fury, which opens this weekend.

After the Tonight Show came back from a commercial break, Jimmy Fallon introduced his show’s first guest, Golden Globe-nominated actress, Shailene Woodley! She danced to Rock the Casbah by The Clash as she came out onto the stage.

Fallon said he had started drinking coffee because she turned him onto Folgers coffee. He had some coffee ready for her.

“Last time we talked herbs,” Jimmy Fallon said. “You brought me garlic one time and horseradish another time. Did you bring me something this time?”

“Yes,” she said, and gave him a basket full of seed packages. “Some of them are heirloom vegetables,” she told him.

“It’s not about just what you grow in your garden,” she said. “There’s a lot of food growing in your yard. My favorite is dandelions.’

“It’s a weed. It’s not a weed?” Fallon asked.

“You can take the dandelion root or leaves and dry them. You can make dandelion tea.”

“Anything else? Pine needles?” Fallon asked her.

“Yes — pine needles are one of the highest natural sources of vitamin C,” she said.

“There are a lot of twists in your latest movie. Basically, your mom goes missing,” Fallon said. “Then, there’s a twist.”

“You really liked the twist, huh?” Woodley asked him

“Yeah, I loved the twist,” he answered.

They talked about the music of the 1980s. Shailene said she loved it, and then they both danced and she showed Fallon a “clearing the cobwebs” move and a “stepping over the dead bodies” move. Then, Fallon showed a clip from White Bird in a Blizzard, Shailene’s latest movie.

“I wanted to do something Autumnal,” Jimmy Fallon said. “Shailene and I will play Pumpkin Time Bomb after the break.”

“It’s a simple game. Shailene band I will place rubber bands around this pumpkin until it explodes,” Fallon said.” Already, it has 198 rubber bands on it.”

They wore safety glasses. Fallon asked her if she ever dressed up for Halloween. She said that she did, but was not sure what she would wear this year.

They kept placing rubber bands on the pumpkin as The Roots played ominous music. The pumpkin would not explode!

“The music is freaking me out!” Jimmy said. They put on a couple more rubber bands, and finally, the pumpkin had enough, and exploded. Then, they showed the playback in slow-motion, and the Tonight Show went to another commercial break.

“Our next guest is Oscar nominated actor, Michael Shannon, who stars in Young Ones. Did you have any other jobs before acting?”

“A plethora. Cleaning fish tanks in a pet store, telemarketing….”

“That sound like fun,” Fallon said.

“Algae was my enemy,” according to Shannon. “I also was a telemarketer for a non-existent radio station. People would hang up on me.”

“I want to talk about Boardwalk Empire,” Jimmy Fallon said. He held up a sign that said Spoiler and asked him about his character dying last week. He told the home viewers to mute their TVs as he talked with Michael about how he found out about his character getting killed off. He said he got a phone call about it and he did not think it was about going out and getting lattes together.

Then, Jimmy Fallon asked Michael about his newest movie, Young Ones. It combines different genres, like cowboy movies. “I have high hopes for it,” Shannon said. “It is going up against some big fall releases, though.” Jimmy Fallon showed a clip from the movie Young Ones. It was very dramatic and will likely do well at the box office.

“Our musical guest, Eric Church, is in the midst of a tour. Here to perform Taladega from his latest album, The Outsiders, ladies and gentlemen, Eric Church!”

Eric did an awesome job! Unlike many other country singers, he did not wear a cowboy hat. He was great on the guitar, though, and whoever played the electric guitar in his band was really jamming on it, as well. The audience really liked the song and clapped and cheered as he finished singing. Fallon walked over with a copy of The Outsiders to show the audience and viewers across America.

The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon this Wednesday was pretty amazing. Shailene Woodley is one of the hottest actresses of today and has already won numerous awards for her acting skills. Also, Jimmy Fallon’s second guest of the night, Michael Shannon, whose most recent movie is Young Ones, talked with Fallon about the flick. Musical guest, Eric Church, who will be playing Madison Square Garden soon on his latest tour, sang Taladega. All in all, it was a great Wednesday episode!

Mike Shannon’s a bit of a hipster, at least he’s a folk culture hipster.
