This Wednesday on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, the guests were Robert Downey Jr (The Judge) and radio personality Ira Glass. Jimmy Fallon and Robert Downey Jr did a skit together, in which they played wise men on top of a snowy mountain. His musical guests were Big Kenny and John Rich of Big & Rich.
Jimmy Fallon did his monologue to start off the Tonight Show. It was hilarious, but due to technical difficulties, none of the jokes from it are included in this recap.
Jimmy Fallon and Robert Downey, Jr did a pretty cool skit where they were both wise men on the top of a snowy mountain. They did not speak, but had a stare-down and voice-overs of their voices made comments back and forth, supposedly “wise” sayings that were kind of silly, but funny. Jimmy Fallon has done a similar skit, before, with actor Jared Leto of Dallas Buyers Club.
Jimmy Fallon introduced his first guest of the Tonight Show, who he said is currently starring in The Judge. Fallon asked him if he saw “those two characters out there, who almost had a fight over Oolong tea.” He called his character “Jasper” and Fallon had developed histories for both of the hermits, or “wise men.”
“They actually got trapped up on that mountain and one had to eat the other. Sad ending,” Fallon said.
Robert Downy Jr talked about an interview he gave with Reddit about forming a super-group. He stated in it that he wanted to have Jimmy Fallon as a member of the super-group, among others.
Jimmy Fallon complimented Robert Downey Jr. on his musical skills and said “You sang a duet with Sting, and sounded just like him,” Jimmy told Robert.
Then, they talked about The Judge. “The Judge is just fantastic! And, with Robert Duval!” Fallon said.
Speaking about Robert Duvall, Robert Downey Jr said that “He said his favorite movie of mine was Chaplin, even though he hasn’t seen it.” He told Fallon that Duvall had sometimes acted as if he knew him, but Robert Downey Jr was kind of suspicious and did not think that Duvall really knew him, even though they had been in a couple of movies together.
They talked about The Judge and Robert’s character having to go back home and take care of his father in the movie, who he represents in court after his father’s car hit somebody. It sounds like it should be a good movie, though not action-packed, like many of the movies are that Robert Downey Jr has acted in. The Judge is the first movie by Robert Downey Jr’s new production company, Team Downey, according to ABC News.
Fallon mentioned that “Your wife is expecting a baby?”
“Yes, she is,” Robert Downey Jr answered. He told Fallon that the baby would be his first daughter.
“Our daughter will probably be an actress,” he added. “That’s a stable career.”
Talking about The Judge again, and Robert Downey Jr’s father in the film, “I’m not going to spoil it for anyone, but he dies in the end,” Fallon joked (or did he?) and then he showed a clip from the movie.
Following a commercial break, The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon returned, and Fallon introduced his second guest of the evening.
“Our next guest is a popular Peabody winning radio personality and producer of ‘This American Life.’ Please welcome Ira Glass!” Jimmy Fallon said. He asked Glass about a Twitter controversy he had been involved in recently, in which Ira wrote in a tweet something about Shakespeare, saying “Shakespeare sucks.” He got a lot of critical comments and even articles written about him calling him “an idiot.”
Fallon asked him again if he thought Shakespeare sucked. Ira hesitated for a bit and said he liked some things about Shakespeare. He thought that some of his plays did not seem to relate very well to modern audiences, though.
Apparently, the controversy did not last a very long time. “Twitter is back to loving you,” Fallon said.
Jimmy Fallon showed some pictures of kids who dressed up in suits to look like Ira Glass for Halloween. Glass talked about an actual crime case that he did a podcast about, making it into basically a play, of sorts.
After another commercial break, Jimmy Fallon then introduced the musical guests of the episode. “Our next guests have a new album out called Gravity that is available now. Please welcome our new pals, singing Look at You, Big & Rich!”
The country music singers Big & Rich did a terrific job singing Look at You. They both played the guitar as they sang. They were great. Jimmy Fallon walked over after they finished the song, with the cover of the album, which he showed to the audience.
This Wednesday on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, the first guest was the amazing actor Robert Downey Jr. His second guest was radio personality, Ira Glass, who talked about a podcast he had done about a crime case. The musical guests were Big Kenny and John Rich, of the country duet, Big & Rich. It was a pretty good Hump Day episode of the Tonight Show.
