John Grisham Apologizes for ‘Child Porn Comments’

Grisham

U.S. author, John Grisham, is no exception to those who express their personal opinions about political issues. However, in one recent expression he made a comment that he is now apologizing for. In an interview with a reporter of Telegraph, to promote his newest book Gray Mountain, Grisham was caught stating that he thought that not all “consumers of child porn” are also pedophiles or sex offenders. He said some who view child porn are just normal guys who accidentally get drunk and press the “wrong buttons.”

Recently he has posted an apology on his website and also made a public statement that he is sorry. He said that anyone who harms a child for profit or pleasure should be punished fully and that he never intended to show sympathy for convicted sex offenders, especially when it comes to those who have harmed children.

Grisham said that his statements come as a result of a good friend of his. He stated that his friend is imprisoned and has been for three years. He said that the story of his friend came when he started drinking and then one night, he clicked on a website that had the label “16 year old wannabe hookers.” He said that he was referring to his friend when he made the statements that some of the guys in prison, who were his age, would never harm anybody and never touch a child.

Though his comments seemed to be personal, he angered many child abuse charities and political activists who deal with the issue. They stated that he was making an excuse for child abuse. Jon Brown of the NSPCC children’s charity stated that that his comments send a dangerous message for those who are ‘just looking’ at images where child porn is involved. He said every image is a real child who has suffered.

Grisham’s comments angered one lawyer so much that he told the author that he should meet survivors of abuse so that he could be educated on the inappropriateness of his comments. Though the comments angered many, others are defending the author.

Radley Balko wrote in The Washington Post that John Grisham should be defended. He stated that people are taking the quote out of context and making him look like a problem. He wrote about how he has spent money and time advocating for justice reform, and in fact, many of his books are about justice. Balko brings up an old discussion that Grisham had where he was talking about how the justice system is unfair racially.

People on social media sites have also taken both sides. Many are calling the author a pervert and a supporter or child porn, stating that they should raid his home. However, some statements have defended Grisham because of the fact that his statements were supposedly based on a personal friend of his.

Whether his comments were right or wrong, John Grisham has officially apologized for his comments and he is working to repair the situation for all those that he offended. Though the author has sold 275 million books in his 25 years of writing, many are stating that these comments could affect sales of his books, in the future.

Many stars have accidentally made harsh comments during interviews with reporters. Sources say that it takes a lot for a public figure to speak openly, though Grisham has officially apologized for the harsh comments that he made during his interview with The Telegraph.
