Renown young adult author, Lemony Snicket, has created an original interactive series of videos entitled You Choose the Mystery that allows viewers to determine the outcome of the story that is being told. The release time of these videos is very accurately planned by the author as his latest book, “Shouldn’t You Be in School?” has just been made available as well.
Snicket is known for penning the very successful A Series of Unfortunate Events novels that follow the troublesome obstacles that are face by three orphaned children, Violet, Klaus and Sunny Baudelaire. In 2004, an adaptation of the first three books in the series was made into a feature film starring a great amount of A-List talent. World-class comedic actor Jim Carrey took on the role of the conniving Count Olaf, the saga’s main protagonist. Sucker Punch actress Emily Browning played Violet, the eldest Baudelaire orphan while legendary film star Meryl Streep plays the children’s frightful Aunt Josephine. A great many other stars played supporting roles and made cameo appearances including Dustin Hoffman, Jude Law, Cedric the Entertainer and Glee’s Jane Lynch.
Lemony Snicket is actually the pen name of author Daniel Handler. Handler created his alias specifically for the Unfortunate Events series due to the fact that Lemony Snicket is an actual character within the books. The new saga, entitled All the Wrong Questions which includes “Shouldn’t You Be in School?” serves as a series of prequel novels to Unfortunate Events and places Snicket’s character in the role of the protagonist. This is a very clever literary move by the author, as it is one that is rarely seen.
The video series Snicket has created entails a number of Old-Hollywood-style, black and white films. The author narrates the entire series himself and hilariously dubs his voice to that of the actors in the videos. The series, found on YouTube, is completely interactive as viewers will click on a “yes” or “no” button at the end of each video depending on what course of action they wish the characters to take in the story. With this, the tale has potential of numerous different endings, causing viewers to wonder what would happen if they chose differently.
Snicket’s direction of the videos reflect that of classic film noir and slapstick humor. Though the material may not appeal to all, it does provide a beautiful essence of nostalgia for classic film performance and allows audiences to remember Snicket’s cleverly sarcastic sense of storytelling. The entire series of videos is colorless minus anytime one of the author’s books is shown in glorious technicolor, whether it be Unfortunate Events or All the Wrong Questions. This is yet another smart marketing move by the author, using an oblivious tactic of product placement in a rather humorous way.
With the creation of this new interactive video series, long-time fans and new followers, alike, will turn their attention back to Lemony Snicket to bask in his genius work. All books from A Series of Unfortunate Events and All the Wrong Questions are available now and can be downloaded as ebooks or purchased at one’s local book retailer. The video series by the author can be viewed an interacted with below.
