Oscar Pistorius Jailed for Five Years

Oscar Pistorius

Oscar Pistorius has been jailed for five years. He has been on trial for the murder of his girlfriend, Reeva Steenkamp. After being found guilty, it was up to the judge to determine whether he should face jail or house arrest.

The decision on the sentencing has been ongoing for a week now. The prosecution said that it would be a disgrace if he was allowed to remain under house arrest. He faced 15 years in jail for his crimes. Pistorius’ defense lawyer asked for a three-year correctional period, where he would be under house arrest and do community service. Prosecutors wanted him jailed for at least 10 years.

Some had expected to hear about the jail sentence. Reports stated yesterday that South Africa’s toughest prison, Central Prison, had a room ready for him. However, the prison bosses deny this has happened.

There are some who worry about the Olympian’s safety. He will not be allowed his prosthetic legs, and that will make him more vulnerable to other inmates. Pretoria Central Prison is said to house the most dangerous criminals in South Africa, and many inmates complain about the threat of rape from gang members and the treatment within the prison by the guards.

Police officers stood in the aisles when the sentencing was read out. They were possibly anticipating or already knew that Pistorius was going to be sentenced to five years in jail.

After arguing with Steenkamp he chased her into the bathroom with a gun then shot her through the door. How could he not know that she was in the bathroom?

I think due to his disability he should have done house arrest. Then 3-6 years community service where he could help others and make a difference . He is not violent and this sentence serves no one,nor does it bring back Steenkamp.
