Police in the city of Wichita, Kansas are reporting that a man was shot and fatally wounded this morning by local law enforcement officers after he was shooting randomly into the air and at an apartment building in a west Wichita subdivision. When confronted, the man began to fire on the officers.
As back-up arrived, Wichita police officers returned fire, fatally shooting the man. Wichita Deputy Chief John Speer indicated that when his officers arrived at the scene and approached the man, “the suspect started firing.”
Several patrol cars were hit by gunfire during the melee, as the suspect began shooting at officers and patrol cars alike. The suspect was shot and killed across the street from the Mount Carmel Village Apartments, near the corner of W. Douglas Ave. and Mount Carmel St.
Police dispatchers were inundated with phone calls to 911 reporting that shots had fired in the area of Sheridan and High streets, several blocks away from the location where the alleged gunman died. Personal details of the deceased man are being with held pending notification of next of kin. No police were injured in the fatal shooting.
