Ryan Gosling and Eva Mendes: Twitter Reaction to Daughter’s Name

Gosling

Today, the name of the daughter born to actor Ryan Gosling and actress Eva Mendes on Sept. 12 was finally revealed and fans took to Twitter to share their reactions, both good and bad. What name did the couple choose for their little girl? She shall be called Esmeralda Amada.

Under the hashtag #GoslingBaby, some users approved of the baby name. Tweets of approval included “Esmeralda is a nice name,” “Such a sweet delicate name” and, despite misspelling it, “Love the name Esmerelda (sic). Ryan & Eva chose well.” Others used the adjectives “pretty,” “romantic,” “unique,” and “glamorous.”

Other Twitter users were not so sure and wasted no time reacting to Gosling and Mendes’ choice for their daughter’s name. “Never been so disappointed in #RyanGosling in my life… Esmeralda? Guys… thats (sic) brutal,” one tweet stated. Other tweets of disapproval included “I need to mentally break up with #RyanGosling because he named his daughter Esmerelda (sic)” and “Majorly disappointed! I hoped for Carmen or Blanca!” Others were simply baffled. “Isn’t that one of the stepsisters in Cinderella?” one Twitter user asked.

Some fans were reminded of a character from the television show and movie Bewitched, while others instantly thought Disney. “Must be my age, but the first thing I thought of when I heard the name was Esmeralda from Bewitched!” one tweet said. Another said “#RyanGosling #EvaMendes named their baby girl Esmeralda…She’s apparently already seduced 12 men with her tambourine.” In the Disney movie The Hunchback of Notre Dame, the character of Esmeralda is a beautiful gypsy who charms everyone she meets. “My favourite (sic) Disney character,” one tweet stated, adding “Beautiful name. Great choice.” Another tweeted was less offended by the name but more so by the constant references to Disney, tweeting “Disney? Never heard of Victor Hugo?”

Still, others took to Twitter not to react to Gosling and Mendes’ daughter’s name but simply to react to the fact that the name was finally released after almost one month since the baby was born. “Drop everything,” one tweet exclaimed in reaction to the headline that the name had been revealed. Another was disappointed that she did not get the news in real-time, tweeting “When you commute in the middle of the day, you miss important/terrible things like Esmeralda Amada Gosling.”

Others took this as an opportunity to take a dig at other celebrity baby names with one person tweeting “I’m so glad that Eva and Ryan did not name their little girl #Blue, #South, #Orange.” This was an obvious reference to Jay-Z and Beyonce’s daughter Blu Ivy, Kanye West and Kim Kardashian’s daughter North and Gwyneth Paltrow and Chris Martin’s daughter Apple. Another said “Good job at picking a real name.”

Still, others took the time to express that they were uninterested. “Do I care? Nope,” one stated. Another referred to everyone interested as nosy people.

As for the middle name, reaction to Amada was not nearly as overwhelming or as polarizing on Twitter, it seems, compared to the first name Ryan Gosling and Eva Mendes chose for their daughter. One Twitter user pointed out its meaning, tweeting “I read her middle name is Amada. Spanish for loved.”
