The life of the iconic actress Marilyn Monroe will be brought to the screen once again, as Lifetime has announced that it is bringing J. Randy Taraborrelli’s bestselling book The Secret Life Of Marilyn Monroe to the small screen. Lifetime will be making a TV miniseries about Marilyn Monroe and it has been confirmed that the cast was joined by Susan Sarandon, an actress who has had a great career herself.
Susan Sarandon, the Oscar winner, who received an award for her work in Dead Man Walking, is set to portrait Monroe’s mother Gladys Mortenson in the new TV miniseries, which is appropriately titled Marilyn. Since Gladys was a diagnosed paranoid schizophrenic, this should be a very juicy role for Susan. Mortenson’s life was perhaps even more dramatic than the life of her daughter. Sarandon’s most recent TV guest starring appearances were on The Big C and Mike & Molly.
The 68-year-old actress decided to take on a very challenging role as Marilyn Monroe’s mother, whose struggles with her own demons certainly had a profound effect on her famous daughter’s life. According to the reports, Gladys had a wild youth and she was diagnosed as a paranoid schizophrenic. Mortenson also witnessed her father’s battle with syphilitic insanity, which eventually lead to his death. Furthermore, Gladys’ mother committed suicide and Marilyn’s mother later became a strong believer in Christian Science. She raised her daughter to believe that sex should be avoided at all costs.
The character of Gladys Mortenson is described as a diagnosed paranoid schizophrenic. Her father died of syphilitic insanity and her mother took her own life as a result of her own mental illness. Mortenson was frequently delusional and sometimes even violent. She was sexually adventurous in her youth, but Gladys taught her daughter that she should avoid sex at all costs. Marilyn’s mother was deeply devoted to Christian Science, she urged Marilyn to reject her reliance on drugs and that her salvation will be achieved by returning to the tenets of the faith.
Marilyn will be a four hour miniseries, which is set to air in 2015. The TV miniseries will center on Marilyn Monroe, the iconic and glamorous star, who was glowing in the red carpets in stunning dresses, while on the other hand, she was daily battling against the demons, fears and insecurities, which she inherited from her mother. Marilyn loved, hated and desperately tried to save Gladys.
In the official plot of the TV miniseries, Lifetime wrote that Marilyn is both the personification of sex, whose first marriage ironically collapsed due to her frigidity and a fragile artist who was seeking protection and the approval of men. However, after tumultuous marriages with Joe DiMaggio and Arthur Miller, she realized she has the strength to stand on her own. She became the Face and Voice of an era, yet, most of all, she wanted to be someone’s mother and someone’s little girl.
Marilyn miniseries was written by Stephen Kronish, the writer of The Kennedys and Laurie Collyer will be the director. Steven Michaels, Jonathan Koch, Stephen Kronish and Keri Selig will be executive produces, however, the role of the iconic actress Marilyn Monroe has yet to be cast.
