The Twilight Saga is making a comeback, making many question whether there are any original ideas anymore. However, many fans of the vampire franchise will certainly be happy, despite it no likely including leading man Robert Pattinson.
Kristen Stewart, who played Bella in the five movies, is rumored to be coming back for the series. Kate Winslet and Stephenie Meyer (the author of the novels) are also rumored to be part of the new Twilight. However, the three are expected to come back in mentor roles than on the screen.
There will be five movies on Facebook, each made by the five directors, who were all incidentally female. The Storytellers—New Creative Voices of The Twilight Saga will be exclusive to the social media site, and is an attempt to promote females working within the media. A group of panellists will mentor the directors working on the films.
Many fans will find it ironic that Twlight is being used to promote feminist views. The saga was all about one female who believed she was nothing without vampire Edward Cullen. When he left, her world fell apart, and she was never really comfortable in her own skin until she was transformed into a vampire, became part of the Cullen family, and had a daughter of her own.
While The Twilight Saga is coming back, it does not seem to be in the way that many fans would hope. The original characters are not likely to be on the screen. This is more about speaking about the creativity behind the franchise, and the involvement of women in the media. It is designed to inspire other women to take that step into the media.
Michael Burns, Lionsgate CEO and vice chairman, is excited to see the new short movies. He did tease that more would be coming after this, and hinted that there may even be more Twilight movies in the works. However, Meyer has previously said that she would not work within the world again. If she did, it would likely be a storyline surrounding werewolf Jacob and Renesme, the daughter of Bella and Edward.
Pattinson had previously stated that he would not return to the role of Edward, saying that he was too old now to play the vampire. While it is disappointing for many, it is also understandable considering he has focused on more mature roles over the last year.
It is viewed as a good option for Facebook. The social media giant is starting to lose touch with its teenage audience. More teenagers are turning away as their parents come onto the site. This will hopefully bring them back because they want to see more about The Twilight Saga on their computer screens.
There has been no confirmation on storyline or on which director will direct each of the five instalments. The whole project, however, has been backed by Women in Film due to the nature of the premise. Fans will be delighted to hear that The Twilight Saga is making a comeback of sorts through social media.
