TLC is making the right move in its decision to end production immediately and cancel the famous show, Here Comes Honey Boo Boo. The show’s immediate cancellation comes amid allegations that the mother is now dating a convicted child molester. The show has been successful over the years, but fans and followers have not been short on promoting their opinions of the show, which involve more than what Mama June does in her spare time.
The allegations, which are the spreading around all of the Internet, is that June “Mama June” Shannon has started a relationship with former ex-boyfriend ,Mark McDaniel. McDaniel is being talked about not only because of who he is allegedly dating, but because he is a convicted child molester who was sent to jail for ten years for forcing oral sex upon an eight-year-old child. The child was also known to be related to Mama June. McDaniel was just released in March of this year, to make the news seem more outrageous. The relationship makes extra headlines because during the rise of the show, which began in August of 2012, Mama June was with Mike “Sugar Bear” Thompson, and the relationship lasted for the entirety of the show. He is also the father of the star of the show, Alana “Honey Boo Boo” Shannon. It was reported that Mama June and Sugar Bear separated in September of last year.
TLC is making the right move on Here Comes Honey Boo Boo based on the health and safety of the children on the show. Not surprisingly, there was a great deal of outcry directed at the network once word got out that there was a convicted felon allegedly dating the mother of Honey Boo Boo. TLC has handled the matter swiftly and drastically, and saying that the children will receive tutors and counselors on the network’s dime. The attempt to help the children’s mental health and education is a respectable way to show that the network cares more about health and safety than it does about ratings and money.
The mental health of the family has been in question ever since the first time Honey Boo Boo was first introduced to America on the TLC show, Toddlers and Tiaras. Once noticed, Thompson was given her own spin-off, which showed the characters of her family and the lifestyle of their overweight, free-spirited country family from Georgia. The show became a hit because of the outrageous conversations, lack of proper English, and unbelievable lifestyle of the family. Each member of the family showed a lack of hygiene, a weight issue and what seemed to be a total misunderstanding of the English language. The thing that made them popular in a positive way was that they did not care. They were just a happy family living together, and it made them very famous, but there was always a question as to whether the children were mentally stable and if they were given the best possible chance at a healthy lifestyle.
TLC cancelling Here Comes Honey Boo Boo is the right move, for more than just because of a convicted child molester, but also because of the health and future of children that were thrown into the spotlight in order to be laughed at. They were respected for their outlook on life, but the overall view of the show was to show how crazy the family had become. With the show over, the children can be out of the spotlight and given the chance for both a normal and a safe life because of what TLC has done to protect them.
