With guests like former Tonight Show host, Jay Leno, and Lucy Liu (Elementary), it was a fantastic Friday night episode of The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon. Jay Leno did some stand-up comedy during the show, and later on, Fallon’s guest Lucy Liu joined him and Kevin Delaney, as Delaney performed science experiments. Jimmy Fallon did his very funny weekly Thank You Notes bit and musician Dave Davies of The Kinks sat in with the Tonight Show‘s house band, The Roots. What does Big Hero 6 have to do with these people and this show? Read on, to find out (sort of)!
Jimmy Fallon, the host of the Tonight Show, began by welcoming his audience. They gave him a standing ovation. Then, Fallon joked about items in the news during his monologue. Some of his jokes, somewhat paraphrased, follow.
“This is the show to be at! Jay Leno is on the show tonight! Here’s what people are talking about,” he said. “The Rockefeller Center Christmas Tree arrived today. Also, North Korea released this incredible photo of Kim Jong-Un at an orphanage, He’s smoking a cigarette, right in the orphanage.”
“This week, McDonald’s is bringing back the McRib. As one executive said, ‘The McRib comes back when the McRib wants to come back.”
Then, Jimmy Fallon did his weekly Tonight Show Superlatives, where he showed pictures of NFL football players and said what the were voted Most Likely to be. Jay Cutler was voted Most Depressed Jason Priestly, for example.
The Roots played Jimmy Fallon to his desk, and he announced who the guests would be. After that, he sent out his weekly “Thank You Notes.” James Poyser played the keyboards, while announcer Steve Higgins and Jimmy Fallon messed with him to try to get him to laugh.
“Thank you, the character Beymax from Big Hero 6, for showing me what the Michelin Man looks like when he takes off his face.” Speaking of Big Hero 6, there is a video clip from it below!
“Thank you, encores, for being a band’s way to make you beg us for playing the only song you came to see.”
“Thank you, slow cookers, for being a total crock.”
Jimmy Fallon said the Tonight Show would be right back with Jay Leno. Watching him do stand-up comedy was one of the highlights of the episode.
“We are joined, right now, by one of the greatest stand-up comedians of all time, as well as one of the greatest Tonight Show hosts of all time, Jay Leno!”
When Leno came out, he did a humorous comedy routine. He joked about Neil deGrasse Tyson criticizing Gravity and the “inaccuracies” in the movie. Then, he said that he had a flip phone that still has its original battery.
He asked the audience if they got into “binge watching” of TV shows, and joked about the so-called “sport” of Competitive Eating. He wondered why soccer was not considered to be a sport in America, but Competitive Eating was.
Then, he brought up steroid use in sports, and said that at least one person on each team should be allowed to be on steroids. He joked about NFL player, Lawrence Taylor, being accused of having sex with a 15-year-old, among other topics.
When the Tonight Show returned from a commercial break, Jimmy Fallon interviewed Leno. Jimmy Fallon asked Leno “How am I doing?”
“Boy, that crisp, Autumn New York weather…”
“I think you have a big career ahead of you,” Fallon quipped.
Jay Leno talked about his first time hosting the Tonight Show, and Fallon showed photos of himself and Jay Leno in a photo shoot. In one, Leno was riding on a motorcycle and Fallon was in the sidecar.
Leno talked about how people thought that the higher someone got up in show business, the more mentally challenged people thought they were. “They’re amazed when I say ‘I drove myself to a photo shoot,” he said, or if he walked to the studio, which he did tonight.
“You got a truck? Is it a quarter-ton or a half-ton one? You don’t even know,” Leno said to Fallon. Then, Jay Leno presented Fallon with receipts for expenses he had incurred, and which Jimmy had agreed to reimburse him for.
Jay Leno then related to Fallon about when he last visited Israel, and how different it was compared to here. He asked for a Coke with ice, and he said that the man he spoke to said “We don’t have any Cokes with ice. How about some dates?”
Leno wondered why or how the man thought that “a Coke with ice” was anything at all similar to “dates.” They both talked a little bit more about Leno’s trip to Israel, then the show went to a commercial break.
After the commercial break, Jimmy Fallon introduced his second guest on the Tonight Show, Lucy Liu. “Our next guest is an Emmy award-winning actress who starts in Eleemntary. Ladies and gentlemen, Lucy Liu!” Fallon said. Jay Leno still remained. He said that “You were my first,” to her — she really was, his first guest on the Tonight Show, that is.
Jimmy Fallon reminded her that the last time he saw Lucy, it was out on the street. Lucy Liu talked about eating at a restaurant with some of her friends from Israel, and they wondered who Jimmy Fallon was. That provoked laughter from Jay Leno.
Jimmy talked about his truck and he told Lucy “I play country music in it,” trying to act all manly.
“I can’t even speak right now,” Lucy said, being between two “manly men,” as she was.
Jimmy Fallon said that his wife drives him around most of the time in town, and he only drives the truck sometimes on the weekend. Then, Jimmy Fallon asked her about Elementary, saying “clearly, you play an Elementary School teacher.”
Lucy Liu said that her relationship with Sherlock will change a lot this new season. The Tonight Show went to another commercial break.
When the show came back, Jimmy Fallon and Lucy Liu put on lab coats and safety classes. Kevin Delaney, from the Museum of Discovery in Little Rock, Arkansas, performed some cool science experiments.
The first experiment involved hydrogen gas. It made a lot of bubbles, and Delaney had a candle with him which he lit and it flamed up.
Then, he did an experiment involving dry ice. He floated an aluminum foil boat on the dry ice. Then, Fallon and Lucy Liu breathed in a heavier-than-air gas, and talked in low voices.
They all had to wear gloves with the next experiment, with nitrogen gas. It is always boiling. Delaney told them they would “make a cloud.” He placed hot water into the nitrogen gas, then a huge white cloud billowed up.
“Oh, my God!” Jimmy Fallon told him. “You’re the coolest guy ever!”
The science experiments that Kevin Delaney performed with Jimmy Fallon and Lucy Liu closed this Friday night episode of The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon. Coming back from the last break, Fallon thanked his guests, and that was the end of the episode. Jay Leno, Lucy Liu, Dave Davies, Kevin Delaney and Fllon, of course, made this be a terrific Friday night episode of the Tonight Show!
