The lovable comedic actress and Oscar nominee Melissa McCarthy has just signed on to play the world’s most iconic fairy, Tinker Bell, in a live-action film that focuses on the life and times of the famed pixie. Night at the Museum director Shawn Levy is signed on to direct the film which is set to be comedy adventure – understandably so with McCarthy taking the lead.
The actress and director both developed the idea and while the plot line and exact concept of the film is still unknown, one can be certain that audiences will be in for a laugh with this fairytale revamp. The classic fantasy stories that many grew up hearing as children have become quite a trend in recreation lately.
Snow White & the Huntsman with Charlize Theron, Red Riding Hood with Amanda Seyfried and the recently released Maleficent starring Angelina Jolie are amongst examples of classic stories told anew, but all of these have taken to a darker tone in their recreation. McCarthy’s Tinker Bell film will be a fresh deviation as the retelling of the classic Peter Pan character will undoubtably provide much comic relief.
Screenwriter Nicholas Stoller will pen the script for the untitled Tinker Bell feature. Stoller’s recent work includes the raunchy comedy Sex Tape as well as the more family-friendly The Muppets: Most Wanted. Stoller’s experience in adult comedy, which McCarthy thrives in brilliantly, as well as more general family content like The Muppets provides and excellent recipe for success for the layout of this Tinker Bell film.
McCarthy has shown her chops in numerous adult comedies such as The Heat, Tammy, Identity Thief and her Oscar nominated performance in Bridesmaids, but the actress has shown herself as a lovable, cuddly and family-oriented woman in the midst of many of her talk show appearances. This goes to show that the actress will be able to calibrate the best of both worlds to give a very unique and fun-loving perspective to the iconic character.
The casting of McCarthy in the role is an intentional comedic gesture that could be considered rather brilliant. The common public know Tinker Bell mostly as the Disney version, a glowing petite-sized pixie in a short green dress. Casting McCarthy, known as a rather obnoxious and sometimes mannish character actress who is considered plus size, but completely comfortable and proud in her own skin, is enough to bring a smile to anyone’s face. The star is bringing to light what it truly means to be an actress – having talent and creativity. One must note that McCarthy’s immense success in Hollywood is a breath of fresh air and very inspiring at that.
Fox Studios is distributing the Tinker Bell film and although Levy is in talks to direct a revamped version of Ali Baba and the Forty Thieves as well as a feature film adaptation of the popular video game Minecraft, it seems as if his collaboration with McCarthy is taking priority. The actress will next star in the upcoming comedy Spy, directed by Paul Feig whom she worked with in Bridesmaids as well as The Heat.
With Melissa McCarthy being cast as Tinker Bell in this upcoming film, it just goes to show that the sky is the limit for this star. Her drive to rise to the top no matter what the obstacles and her immense creativity are forces to truly be reckoned with. One can only hope that McCarthy will inspire many more artists to follow in her footsteps.
