Black Friday and Thanksgiving weekend are over and many stores are both recovering and gearing up for the rest of the Holiday season. Black Friday means great deals on a lot of products across American stores. Consumers wait in line for hours, some for days, just to get the best deals on some big name products. One of the bigger sales items this season was the Solo HD headphones from Beats by Dr Dre. The headphone that regularly sells for $169 was on sale for $79 and proved to be one of the major items providing the newest Apple acquisition a big Black Friday.
At Best Buys across the country many people were anxious to get their hands on the headphones that had been the top seller for the last three years. Best Buy opened doors at 5pm on Thanksgiving evening and most the stores were completely sold out of the Solo HDs before the night even ended.
2014 has been a big year for the Dr Dre, Jimmy Iovine owned company. With the launch of the Solo 2 headphones, a sale to Apple for $3.2 billion, Powerbeats 2 wireless, and the recently launched Solo 2 wireless, the company shows no signs of giving up their hold at the top of the headphone market.
NBA superstar Lebron James designed the Powerbeats, which is a sweat resistant headphone designed for working out. Less than a year after the launch, the company released it’s first wireless earphone in the form of the Powerbeats 2. Since the launch of the Powerbeats 2 it has been met with great reviews, being praised for bringing the signature beats sound to a wireless earphone that will not get in the way while running or in the gym.
The Solo 2 wireless was leaked on the internet a little sooner than Beats was planning. Instead of panicking or denying it until they were ready, they rolled with it and moved the release date up. Within a week of the world finding out on the internet, they had already launched the marketing campaign, which can be seen on commercials for almost all major shows. The fact that Bose is the official headphone of the NFL has not slowed down advertising campaign during games.
With the campaign #SoloSelfie, featuring many artists, athletes, and celebrities, Beats was able to market on both TV and social media. Some of the commercials feature Kendall and Kylie Jenner, and New York Giants wide receiver Victor Cruz.
While the Solo 2 wireless headphones were not available in stores over Thanksgiving weekend, the company still saw great sales for many of their other items. In addition to the Solo HD’s being at the low price, consumers gobbled up the Urbeats for only $59, and the Studio headphones for $100 off regular price. Black Friday is a big day for most stores and companies alike; many bank the entire year on just the holiday sales numbers.
Beats by Dr. Dre, certainly had a great weekend, as many of their competitors were not offering deals anywhere close to theirs. With less than a month left in 2014 it will be interesting to see if Beats or Apple has anything else up their sleeves to further the gap with their competition.
