Amid numerous allegations of sexual abuse, comedian Bill Cosby, has escaped criminal charges. Although there have been a few civil cases leveled against the star, he has yet to answer to these allegations in a criminal court. Many believe his alleged victims were intimidated by his fame. Although several women have come forward and alleged sexual abuse at the hands of Cosby, there have been no instances in which the incident was eligible for prosecution. In most cases, its statute of limitations had run out.
Andrea Constand, former women’s basketball director of operations at Temple University, filed a lawsuit in 2005 against Cosby after she alleged he drugged and assaulted her in 2004. She stated that the incident happened in his Pennsylvania home. Constand then reported the incident to Police but they did nothing. She went on to say that Bill Cosby’s representatives lied to the media about her. When another alleged victim, Beth Ferrier, told her story to The National Enquirer, tv’s favorite dad promised the magazine an exclusive interview about Constand’s case in exchange for silencing Ferrier’s story. The comedian occupied a seat on Temple University’s board of trustees at the time and has since stepped down from his position. The case between Constand and Cosby was settled with an undisclosed result.
In a similar story, Judy Huth, who was 15 at the time, said she was molested by the entertainer in a room at the famous Playboy Mansion in 1974. According to the victim, Cosby attempted to put his hand in her pants while prompting her to touch him in an inappropriate manner. The funny-man’s accuser said she didn’t know how it had affected her life until recently once again allowing Bill Cosby to escape being charged with a crime.
Perhaps the most dramatic accusations came from former supermodel Janice Dickinson. She accused the philanthropist of drugging and sexually assaulting her when she was 15 as well. The outspoken ex-model called Cosby a monster telling CNN that, after a dinner in Nevada, he gave her a pill for menstrual cramps causing her to pass out. She said that when she awoke, she had pictures of Cosby wearing only a robe in her possession that she had apparently taken. Also, she goes on to say, there were obvious signs of sexual abuse. Dickinson said she then gathered her belongings and fled. The model admits she was too embarrassed to report it. At the time, she claimed she pushed it down because he was such a powerful man.
In subsequent weeks, a mounting number of alleged victims have come forward to tell stories of Cosby’s misconduct. Actress Louisa Moritz, best known for her role in the movie, One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest, said that after Bill Cosby assaulted her, he told her that she should not upset him or it would hurt her “future.”
Many Universities, including The Berkley College of music and the University of Massachussets-Amhurst, have severed ties with the mogul in the wake of these allegations. Statements made by their representatives were careful, though, not to include specific reasons for the split. Temple University’s student body president stated that Bill Cosby put the school’s reputation in jeopardy after more than 1000 students signed a petition to cut ties with the entertainer.
To date, more than 20 women have joined in the campaign against the family man , thrusting this issue into the limelight. However, for now at least, Bill Cosby escapes criminal charges.
