Carolina Panthers’ quarterback Cam Newton was involved in a car accident Tuesday and was taken to the hospital. According to initial reports, the NFL quarterback suffered two fractures in his lower back after the accident near the team stadium.
He is reportedly in fair condition and is undergoing tests. CNN reported that he would remain in the hospital overnight for observation. The small bone extending from each vertebra in his back was injured. According to sources, he did not suffer any other internal injuries. It would be a surprise if he took to the playing field Sunday.
He was transported to the hospital after the truck he was riding in crashed in Charlotte, said Rob Tufano, Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department spokesman. Newton’s truck and another vehicle were involved in the accident. Tufano said that Newton’s truck rolled over in the accident.
At this time, no cause for the accident was given. Witnesses told CNN that his truck rolled over four times. WSOC uploaded a picture of a dark truck on its side in the roadway. Another car with front end damage was hauled onto a flatbed truck. Tufano stated the driver of the other vehicle was taken to the hospital along with Newton and treated for minor injuries. A picture of the quarterback on his side smiling was tweeted by The Charlotte Observer.
The Panthers QB was placed on a stretcher at the scene of the accident and loaded onto an ambulance. According to Charlotte police, Newton was not hurt in the accident and was taken to the hospital as a precautionary measure. It was reported by Fox Sports Carolinas that Newton did not want to be transported and debated with authorities and medics in regards to it.
The injury is said to be treated like a rib injury and he would more than likely have to wear additional padding to protect his back during games. Tony Romo reportedly suffered a similar injury earlier in the season. Newton may have to miss two days of practice or more, as rest and recuperation is advised. According to Mautner, fractures can take one to three weeks for patients to deal with.
In 2010, Newton led the Auburn Tigers to an undefeated national championship. He also won the coveted Heisman Trophy and was drafted in the first round by the Carolina Panthers. He became the first player in history to lead a team undefeated to a national championship, receive the Heisman Trophy, and be drafted in the first round in the same year.
In 2011, he signed a four-year deal with the Panthers for $22 million. Newton, an Atlanta native, racked up more than 4,000 passing yards and more than 700 rushing yards, getting him the Rookie of the Year award.
This season, the Panthers have been gripped with injuries, and are currently 4-8-1 going into this weekend. It is debatable, but Newton’s best game this season was this past weekend against the New Orleans Saints. He threw for three touchdowns and rushed for one touchdown. The Panthers are still in the playoff hunt despite their less than stellar record this season and Cam Newton being taken to the hospital, and they are competing for the top spot in the NFC South.
