Months ago, there was news that a Frozen sequel was being planned but not confirmed, and now it is definitely happening. Voice actress Idina Menzel has confirmed that the movie is no longer on ice. Work has already started on it.
Frozen took the world by storm when it was released last year. Let It Go is still one of the songs on children’s lips. There are many reasons for the success, but one of those is the fact that two main female characters show that the love between sisters can be so much more than the love between partners. Princess Anna of Arrandale sacrifices herself to save her sister, and that one act of “true love” thaws her frozen heart.
Menzel does the voice for ice queen, Elsa. However, she is best known for her roles in If/Then and Wicked on Broadway. She confirmed that the sequel was in the works, and that she is just “going along for the ride.” Judging from her words, she is definitely reprising her role as one of the two main characters. There is hope that Kristen Bell will reprise her role as the voice of Anna.
The stage show is also still in the works, according to the theater actress. However, she has not confirmed whether she is part of it yet. She does not know everything that is happening.
The Disney movie is based on Hans Christian Anderson’s The Snow Queen. It became the highest-grossing musical, knocking Mamma Mia and The Lion King off the top spots. The movie also overtook Toy Story 3 as the highest-grossing animated movie. There is still chance for it to become one of the three top movies of all time, but currently sits in fifth place. The movie grossed $1.27 billion around the world.
There are other Frozen things planned, but the sequel is one that is definitely happening. There is no confirmed date as of yet, but it is expected for the festive season. It is certainly not expected immediately. A Wrinkle in Time by Madeleine L’Engle is being adapted by Frozen director Jennifer Lee first. This is expected to be another Disney movie.
A short film is expected for next year. It will see Anna celebrate her birthday, and will be called Frozen Fever. There is no news over while movie the short is expected to preface, but is expected to hit theaters by next spring. It will be a six minute movie to wet appetites for the time being.
There are various ideas for a sequel. One of those is for Anna and Kristoff’s wedding. However, this could be unlikely considering the praise creators got for not taking the traditional damsel in distress and “Prince Charming” route.
Parents around the world are looking at Frozen merchandise for gifts this year. Stores everywhere are stocking up on DVDs, dolls, and clothing ranges with the favorite characters. While Anna and Elsa are the two favorites, many have taken to Olaf the Snowman and his summer clothing style.
Hopefully it will not be too long to find out more about a sequel. The good news for many children is that a Frozen sequel is definitely happening.
