On The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon this Tuesday, Fallon’s guests were the amazing actor, Christoph Waltz (Big Eyes), and the very talented rapper, Nicki Minaj. Nicki was also the musical guest, along with Skylar Grey. Host Jimmy Fallon talked with Waltz about Santa’s assistant, Krampus, and continued giving away a sweater a night as it is the “12 Days of Christmas Sweaters,” and each member of the audience also got a cool gift, as it is the time of the year when Fallon gives out “Stocking Stuffers.”
Jimmy Fallon began the Tonight Show by welcoming his audience, who gave him a standing ovation. Then, he performed his nightly comedy monologue, poking fun of people in today’s headlines. Some of the jokes from his monologue follow, in a somewhat paraphrased form.
“Here’s what everyone’s talking about,” Jimmy Fallon began. “President Obama said he really needed some ideas about what to get Michelle as a Christmas gift. He was being interviewed by Ryan Seacrest, and he said ‘What I really need is a woman’s perspective. What do you think, Ryan Seacrest?'”
Jimmy Fallon continued, saying “Biden is keeping busy, He just released his holiday card with his entire family in a sleigh. Biden is the only one not doing anything.”
“President Bush said ‘Never paint your wife or your mother — because it’s awfully tough getting the paint out of their hair.”
“This evening marks the beginning of Hanukkah, that special time of the year when you find out your friend’s Jewish and you wonder about how many times you wished him a ‘Merry Christmas.'”
“A Fed Ex truck crashed in New Jersey. When anything falls out of a truck in New Jersey, it’s actually the law not to ask any questions,” Fallon said.
“Paul McCartney will be here tomorrow night, you guys!” he said after The Roots played him to his desk. Tony Bennett and Lady Gaga will be on the show, also,” Fallon said.
“From the Tim Burton movie, Big Eyes, Christoph Waltz will be here! And, with her new album The Pinkprint, out, Nicki Minaj will also be here!”
“We have the ’12 Days of Christmas Sweaters,’ bit next, and we will see who goes home tonight with the Christmas sweater. #311 is the winner!” he said, and ran up the aisle to give the sweater to a woman at the back of the audience. She screamed with happiness — she said she was from “Arkansas!”
“I’m in the spirit of giving,” Fallon said. “Every night this week, we are giving away an awesome gift to everyone in the studio audience. Tonight’s ‘Stocking Stuffer’ is a Vitamix top of the line blender!” Announcer Steve Higgins said it retailed for over $400. Then, the Tonight Show went to a commercial break.
When The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon came back, Fallon talked about spending time with an old friend at Summer Camp. Justin Timberlake played his friend. They played a game of “Truth or Dare.” Justin had a beard. He said he grew it last summer.
Fallon started to sing, and Timberlake joined in. Then, the head counselor of the camp burst in, saying that they were too loud and needed to quiet down.
They pulled the covers over their heads, but still continued humming, finally starting to sing the same song again. The head camp counselor came into the cabin again, saying that they had lost their snack privileges.
He said “I was in a weed-whacking accident,” when they shone their flashlights on his shorts. Timberlake said “Best friends forever?” and Fallon said “Yeah, best friends forever,” Then they started singing again, and the camp counselor burst in, yelling “Timberlake! Fallon!” It was a pretty cool and funny skit.
After more commercials, the Tonight Show came back on and Jimmy Fallon introduced his first guest of the evening. He said that Christoph Waltz is starring in Tim Burton’s movie, Big Eyes. “Ladies and gentlemen, please welcome Christoph Waltz!”
Fallon asked Christoph about the difference in holiday traditions between Austria and the United States. Fallon said that the Elf on the Shelf told on kids who were naughty.
“He looks like a wimp,” Waltz said. “It’s a Catholic country, and works through traumatization. We have Krampus the evening before Christmas. He is St. Nicholaus’ assistant. Krampus comes with a stick and a bag. It you aren’t good, you get stuck in the bag.”
Jimmy Fallon then showed a Krampus doll. He looked pretty furry and demonic.
“You have to remember Sigmund Freud was from Austria,’ Waltz said. “It’s a medieval tradition where young men in the mountains still put on fur and get drunk, not necessarily in that order, and they storm through the village, terrorizing young children.”
The two talked about Big Eyes and about the paintings of big eyed children that were popularized by an artist called “Keane.” The husband took credit for the paintings, but his wife really painted them. Her husband was pretty much a con man.
“Nicki Minaj joins us next! Come on back, everybody!” Jimmy Fallon said. Then the show went to yet another break.
When The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon returned, host Jimmy Fallon introduced his second guest of the night, the amazing singer Nicki Minaj. “Please welcome the one and only Nicki Minaj!”
Fallon asked her what made the print on the cover of her album her finger or thumb. Nicki told him it was her thumb.
“Where else did you work?”
“I was an office manager and I would call in whenever I didn’t want to work,” Nicki said. “I was also a waitress. If you ever ate at Red Lobster, I probably took your order. That is what made me want to follow my dream,” she revealed, as she did not want to continue working at a restaurant her entire life.
“Anaconda alone, that sold a couple million albums….” Fallon mentioned.
“It went double platinum,” Minaj said.
“The YouTube video has over 42 million hits so far,” Fallon said. He told Minaj that her impression of Beyonce on Saturday Night Live was great. He showed one of her Yearbook pictures, and said “That is so not ‘Ew!‘”
She told Fallon that the song she will be singing with Skylar Grey is Bed of Lies, off of her album The Pinkprint. First, though, the Tonight Show headed to more commercials.
Nicki Minaj covered up more for her performance of Bed of Lies than she usually does in her recent videos. She was dressed in fur –maybe it is pretty cold in New York City today. She looked cool, though, as usual, and the rapping that she did during the song was awesome. The song was fantastic, and Skylar’s voice was beautiful, singing the chorus.
