Frozen star Kristen Bell and a cappella group Straight No Chaser have collaborated on a new Christmas Carol. Text Me Merry Christmas is a witty song that pokes fun at the informality of modern technology and comments on texting being the latest form of communication, especially among couples.
Emmy winner David Javerbaum and Oscar-nominated Adam Schlesinger began working on the modern Christmas carol in May. By July, Straight No Chaser and Kristen Bell were ready to record the song.
When Bell was sent the demo for the new Christmas carol, she immediately replied, saying she would love to do it. Bell described her excitement to work on this project in an interview saying the lyrics were funny and smart.
At the time of recording, she was pregnant with her second child with husband, Dax Shepard. Shepard is currently starring in the NBC drama, Parenthood, which is in its sixth and final season.
A polished version of the song was released November with a music video. The video used the screen of a smartphone to display the lyrics as they were being sung so it could demonstrate the humor of the song with texting. Ryan Seacrest premiered the new animated version of the video, where Bell and SNC are dolls.
In the video, the doll version of Bell is sending selfies to her boyfriend. Meanwhile, SNC can be seen hanging from lights, running around like elves, and knocking things over. Kristen Bell and Straight No Chaser collaborating on a new Christmas Carol was a decision that produced a musical hit.
This is not the first musically focused gig for the Frozen star. Before she provided the vocals for Anna, she lent her vocals in the remake of movie musical Reefer Madness in 2005. Additionally, she has provided vocals for Anna for the Frozen Sing-a-long.
Kristen Bell held the title role in Veronica Mars, which only lasted for three seasons and spawned a movie. She has also found fame being Sarah in Forgetting Sarah Marshall, and is the voice of the anonymous blogger in Gossip Girl. In addition to the number of advertisements she has done for Samsung, and short web clips for Funny or Die, she is not shy to try her hand at a variety of different projects.
Straight No Chaser formed the a cappella group in 1996 at Indiana University. They gained immense popularity in 2006 for their arrangement of 12 Days of Christmas from 1998. The group’s performance from that year has had over 17 million views on YouTube, making them a viral sensation.
The a cappella group of 12 has released a number of albums that include cover songs, TV theme songs, and of course, the obligatory holiday album. Text Me Merry Christmas is available on SNC’s latest holiday album, Under the Influence: Holiday Edition.
SNC praised Bell for her vocals. They commented that after hearing the first demo, the only voice they wanted for their new Christmas song was Kristen. It was also mentioned that her comedic tone was spot-on and she perfected every note. The group was entranced by her skill.
Kristen Bell and Straight No Chaser decided to collaborate on a new Christmas Carol. The result was a mix of musical comedy and melodic tones that makes Text Me Merry Christmas a new hit for the a cappella group.
