There are multiple reports that the Tottenham Hotspurs are gearing up to target several players in the January transfer window, but many of them are going to present a battle for the club because they are also being targeted by other Premier League clubs as well. Manager Mauricio Pochettino has expressed interest in several players both from within the Premier League and across Europe, but the best and brightest of them appear to be in the sights of other clubs which may be in a position to make their prospects for a happy January dim. Pochettino has no intention of offering quiet acquiescence, however, and looks to take the challenge head-on.
One of the more persistent rumors regarding Tottenham’s transfer window intentions is that they are pursuing Morgan Schneiderlin, midfielder for Southampton. Prior to the season, Tottenham made a £10 million offer for Schneiderlin which was refused by Southampton, and the club has stated that he would not be available during the January window. Even so, rumors that the midfielder is wanting to move on from his current club persist, encouraging interest from Pochettino. It has also sparked interest in Arsene Wenger and his Arsenal club, however, and it is becoming more and more likely that if Schneiderlin does become an available transfer target, they would join the battle and attempt to trump any offer from the Tottenham club.
Arsenal is reported to be in the mix for yet another player that Tottenham has their eyes on, though the contest may involve Liverpool as well. All three clubs are reported to be interested in the same player. Also said to be unavaiable, as they all are at this point in the process, Porto’s Jackson Martinez has become a heavily sought after commodity. While articles have been circulating indicating that Pochettino is determined to go “all out” in pursuit of Martinez, that may not be enough to keep him from being taken by Wenger or Rodgers if he does actually come onto the transfer market.
There is one player just recently reported as the number one focus of the Spurs’ intentions, and he has no other rumors surrounding him at the moment. According to this latest accounting, Tottenham intends to lead off with an early play for West Brom striker, Saido Berahino. They are expected to make a bid right on January 1 to try to secure him for the club. There is some speculation about what the pursuit of a striker means in terms of current players who might be shopped around in January. It likely means that either Roberto Soldado or Emmanuel Adebayor, or both of them, may find themselves playing somewhere else by the time the transfer window closes.
Not even to Boxing Day yet, there is still plenty of time for things to change before the January break has concluded and the dust settled. At this early juncture, however, it looks like an uphill battle for the Tottenham Hotspurs as they go into the expected battles of the transfer window. Though not disastrous, the season has not been all that the club’s fans would have hoped for. January is the best opportunity for Pochettino to make something happen to turn that around, and he seems poised to dig in and do just that.
