Cobie Smulders has given birth to her second child. People confirmed that she and husband Taran Killam welcomed the new addition, but has not confirmed the gender. It makes five-year-old Shaelyn Cado a big sister.
The 32-year-old reportedly gave birth three weeks ago, but has only just announced the news. While in Sundance, she explained that she has a three-week-old baby and could relate to her character in Unexpected. In the movie, she plays a teacher who finds out she is expecting a baby. She becomes friends with one of her students, who is also currently expecting a baby.
Because she was pregnant at the time, there was no need for the use of “fake bellies.” That can happen a lot in the industry, as the writers make characters pregnant and hire actresses that are not currently expecting. However, Smulder’s second pregnancy worked in perfectly with the filming, so the real bump was on show the whole time. She also used her own sonogram, according to an interview in December with Entertainment Weekly.
The way the news was broken was very casually. It was as if the world should have already known that Smulders gave birth to her second child.
While she was able to use her pregnancy to her advantage in Unexpected, her first pregnancy was a little more difficult. In 2009, she was playing Robin on How I Met Your Mother, and her character had already revealed that she could not have children. It meant the directors had to find ways to hide her growing bump during the filming.
Her co-star Alyson Hannigan was expecting a baby at the same time. Hannigan’s character Lily was not at the stage of having babies, either. Both actresses had to have their bumps hidden. However, when Hannigan’s character was pregnant and the actress was not, the fake bumps had to be used during filming.
Smulders and Killam revealed that they were expecting their second child in October. At the time of reporting, it seemed to fall at the perfect time. While going into film Unexpected, she had just finished filming Results. This was the second movie that she was promoting at Sundance. When announcing the pregnancy, there was no confirmation over how far along she was. Many presumed that she was around three months pregnant, but it is clear that she was much further along.
Despite announcing that she had her baby, Smulders did not say any other details. Killam has not opened up about his new baby, either. The two are very private people, so it is expected that they would keep news like this to themselves.
Both have very busy careers at the moment, but the 32-year-old actress said that she is blessed. She is able to have a career because she has so much support around her. The actress will also appear in Avengers: Age of Ultron, due out later this year. Killam is also working on Saturday Night Live’s fifth season. However, Smulders has given birth to her second child, and is enjoying her family time.
