The X-Men cast is getting a Game of Thrones star for the next movie. Sophie Turner is joining X-Men: Apocalypse, according to director Bryan Singer. Marvel fans will get to see the latest instalment in 2016.
Turner is best known for her role on Game of Thrones, where she plays the unfortunate Sansa Stark. After spending two seasons trapped with psycho Joffrey Baratheon, she was finally able to escape thanks to Littlefinger. However, it was not all plain sailing at first, as she almost ended up through the moon door at the hands of her jealous Aunt Lysa. Now she seems to have taken on a darker wardrobe, as she takes over The Vale with her uncle-by-marriage.
With the shorter seasons on Game of Thrones, it does mean Turner can take on other roles. The popular TV show seems to have even helped her land larger roles, with X-Men: Apocalypse being the latest.
Singer already announced that new actors would take on the roles of Storm, Jean Grey and Cyclops. Up until now, he had not announced who would take over the roles. Now it has been confirmed that the Game of Thrones star will be joining the X-Men cast as Jean Grey. She replaces Famke Janssen as the telepathic mutant, with big boots to fill.
Singer also confirmed that young Cyclops will be played by Tye Sheridan. This is not the same young Cyclops who appeared in X-Men Origins: Wolverine, just to make it really confusing for fans. It is worth remembering that Wolverine’s events from his standalone movie are no longer relevant. They were wiped out after X-Men: Days of Future Past, the prequel to everything.
The prequel did mean that characters have a fresh start. That means Sheridan can take over the character and make it his own, without worrying too much about the events that came before. He takes the role from James Marsden, whose Cyclopse character was killed off in X-Men: The Last Stand.
While the Game of Thrones star was announced as Jean Grey, Alexandra Shipp was named as the person taking over Halle Berry’s Storm. The 23-year-old actress is best known for her role as Aaliyah in the late singer’s biopic.
Jennifer Lawrence, James McAvoy and Michael Fassbender have already confirmed they will reprise their roles in the new X-Men movie. This is believed to be the final instalment in the First Class series. At the same time, there are rumors that Channing Tatum will appear in Apocalypse as Gambit, and Deadpool will make an appearance with Ryan Reynolds playing the character. These are rumors for now, as the two are supposed to be getting their own movies. It would make sense to introduce them in the bigger movie to make sure fans take to them.
It is certainly shaping up to be a good cast for the next X-Men instalment. With the three big names returning, it will help to ease younger actors into the mix. One thing that is exciting is to see Turner’s acting talent in the movie as she joins the X-Men cast from Game of Thrones.
