Helix, Syfy Channel’s hit series, will be returning for its 13-episode second season this Friday night at 10:00 p.m. ET/9:00 p.m. CT. Season one of Helix saw the doctors from the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) trying to combat a mysterious Narvik outbreak in the frigid Arctic. The second season premiere, Deep Calls to Deep, will find the doctors still haunted by that outbreak, and Alan Farragut (Billy Campbell) will infiltrate a cult on an island to search for more information about the Ilaria organization. The CDC doctors will find that playing God has a price.
There has been an outbreak of a virus on the strange island, and 27 people who are on a Windjammer cruise ship have since died after they ate food from the island. The CDC scientists must find out what is behind the deaths and the outbreak and try to confine it and get it under control before there are even more deaths.
The people on the island are not what they seem to be, and neither is the island. Peter Farragut (Neil Napier), Alan’s brother, Patient Zero of the unchecked outbreak in season one, continues to struggle with his personal demons, his allegiance to his brother, and his former lover Dr. Julia Walker (Kyra Zagorsky). Ilaria might hold the key to combating the Narvik outbreak, but getting the information from them and getting them to admit their culpability might be extremely difficult to do.
Just how deeply is Peter involved with Ilaria? Julia, Alan’s ex-wife, sure seems to be a higher-up in the organization of 500 people who have been given immortality and silvery eyes. Her saving Dr. Sarah Jordan, played by Jordan Hayes, from dying due to her tumor also gave Sarah the same sort of silver-colored peeps. Will the baby she is carrying, who is also going to be Alan’s offspring, be human, or also an immortal?
As the CDC scientists unravel the many secrets that the island holds, they will encounter dangers that they have never faced before. The setting is greener, more alive than that of season one, and more open.
Those people who have become infected develop a yellow fungus on their bodies and faces. The utopia that the people on the island had been attempting to establish seems to have deteriorated into something apocalyptic, like a plague from the Bible.
Billy Campbell has acted in Killing Lincoln and The Killing, and Neil Napier has starred in X-Men: Days of Future Past. Fans of Supernatural might have seen Kyra Zagorsky acting in that popular TV series.
New to the cast of season two of Helix are Matt Long (Mad Men, Jack and Bobby), as the intelligent and charming world-class toxicologist Dr. Kyle Sommer, and Steven Weber, who starred in Wings. Weber will play the charismatic leader of the cult, Brother Michael, in a recurring role.
If the second season of Helix is as complex and engrossing as season one was, this series on the Syfy Channel will likely continue to attract a wider and wider audience.
