The national anthem at 2015’s Super Bowl will be sung by Idina Menzel. The announcement was made on Friday by the NFL. She is said to be humbled at the opportunity for such a prestigious moment.
Super Bowl XLIX is at Glendale’s University of Phoenix Stadium on February 1. The pregame coverage will being at 12pm ET, and the game will kickoff at 6:30pm ET.
While announcing that Menzel will sing the national anthem, the NFL also announced that John Legend will sing America the Beautiful. There is big line-up for the night with Katy Perry performing at the half-time show.
This year’s Super Bowl has been clouded in controversy. The NFL announced that it was considering charging performers for performing at the half-time show, which led to many artists upset and angry. They already do the performance unpaid, due to the exposure that they get. Most have tours that run straight off the back of the half-time performance, which are usually sold out. The NFL announced that it was time the artists should pay for that exposure, since they make so much money from it. There was no mention over whether the national anthem singer would need to pay for the opportunity.
Friday night, the NFL announced that Menzel would sing the national anthem at the Super Bowl this year. This is off the back of her success as the voice of Elsa in Frozen. Her song Let It Go quickly hit the number five spot on the Billboard top 100 after the success of the movie. She has also had success on Broadway with her musical If/Then.
Menzel quickly went to Twitter to announce the news to her fans. She said that she was very humble for the opportunity, and still remembers Whitney Houston performing the national anthem at the 1991 Super Bowl.
A number of big names have sung the Star-Spangled Banner in the past, including Cher, Beyonce and Christina Aguilera. Aguilera’s performance was clouded by her mixing up the lines of the national anthem, but she continued as if nothing had happened; the sign of a good performer.
As for the half-time show, Perry announced that she would not be alone. Lenny Kravitz will be her special guest joining her on the stage. There have been a number of duo performances for the half-time show, such as Bruno Mars inviting the Red Hot Chilli Peppers to perform with him last year. A source says that Perry and Kravitz will perform American Woman on the stage, but no other information has been shared. There is talk that Rihanna may join them on the stage at some point. She was considered in the running for this year’s half-time show.
It is expected to be a big night for music this year. There is hope that the game will be just as good, especially compared to last year’s disappointing finale to the football season. Big names have been announced for all the musical acts this year, with Menzel getting the opportunity to sing the national anthem at the Super Bowl.
