The Salvatore family on The Vampire Diaries dropped like flies in the first season, but six seasons in there is a new member in town. The real Sarah Salvatore will make an appearance, which has been teased since the first mention of her at the start of the season. Tristan Mays has landed the role of the great-niece of Stefan and Damon.
Sarah was introduced at the start of season six of The Vampire Diaries, and became a possible love interest for the grieving Jeremy Gilbert. However, Stefan soon announced that he knew the girl was an imposter, and the story about her heritage finally came out. It turned out that Zach Salvatore was married in 1994, but an emotionless Damon killed his pregnant wife. The baby survived and Stefan ensured the child’s safety from his brother.
The real Sarah is a gifted photography student, who has no idea about her real parentage. However, with Enzo looking to destroy anything good in Stefan’s life, that is not going to last for long. During the second half of the season, she will find out everything about her real family and what it really means to be a Salvatore. Many fans have already seen her appear in the trailer for Woke Up With a Monster, the mid-season premiere that airs on Thursday night.
Mays will make her The Vampire Diaries debut as the new Salvatore in town. For those interested in watching her act before tuning in, she is on The Wedding Ringer with Josh Gad and Kevin Hart.
While fans will say hello to a new character, they will also say goodbye to an old one. Steven R. McQueen was confirmed as one of the series regulars leaving, despite the show getting picked up for a seventh season. His character is not dying, though. He will be moving onto college and will return for family events, such as weddings and funerals. It is expected that he will become someone similar to Rebekah in spin-off show The Originals.
The Vampire Diaries fans were not happy about the news of Jeremy’s character. They have regularly complained that he has not added anything to the show, and it is like the writers were giving fans a reason not to care that he is leaving. However, that was certainly not the intension. It is clear to the show runners Caroline Dries and Julie Plec that every character is important.
Plec has hinted that the show is coming to an end, and will end within the next three years. She told Variety that each time a character says goodbye, it is like it is getting closer to that final moment. The show runners already have the final moment in mind, but cannot say when they will get to it yet. It is likely that The Originals will end at the same time as its parent show.
For now, there are many characters still with stories to tell. One of those is Stefan Salvatore, as he welcomes the new Salvatore in town on The Vampire Diaries.
