The Dodge Ram pickup has been fastidiously redesigned for its 2016 debut, including luxury versions of its workhorse essence. These behemoths of the pickup truck world were debuted at the Chicago Auto Show on Thursday. Automotive critics stated that Dodge’s new light- and heavy-duty pickups are big, bold and flashy.
Fiat Chrysler, the maker of the Dodge Ram, has added a plethora of chrome features to the exterior of the trucks, including all-new, flashy front grilles and a big, chromed “RAM” on the tailgate, making the Laramie Limited stand out in the world of pickup trucks. Greg Howell, chief designer of the Ram exterior, stated the Ram was not being noticed in the marketplace as much as the company wanted, although the truck was known for a radical-looking exterior.
The fashionable grille sports a “twin nostril” design, with a chrome “RAM” centerpiece. Uncharacteristically, the truck does not have the quintessential crosshair symbol – making it one of two trucks at the Chicago Auto Show without the nostalgic detail. Bob Hegbloom, Ram CEO and president, explained the brand is not dropping the classic cross-hair design, but have for the Laramie Limited because potential buyers are looking for a unique-looking exterior. A supervisor who pulls up to the construction site wants his crew and those in view to see that he is an important, more sophisticated gentleman, Hegbloom specified.
He explained the redesign of the Laramie Series was targeted to the aforementioned market of people who want the capability and brute force of a full-size pickup truck, but also appreciate the comfort of luxury amenities. This newly designed Dodge Ram is for the outdoorsman who trudges through the mud of the back country, but dresses in a two-button suit during the workweek.
The light-duty Dodge Ram 1500 boasts all the bells and whistles of a luxury SUV, like a GMC Denali or even a Range Rover, including real wood interior trimming, fine leather, a top-of-the-line navigation system, and a smorgasbord of other pleasantries. The new Ram does not only please the eyes of potential customers, it packs a pretty powerful punch. Its drive train includes a 395 horsepower 5.7-liter Hemi V8 attached to Fiat Chrysler’s new eight-speed automatic transmission. The engine is your normal powerful pickup truck engine, albeit a bit more sophisticated. The Hemi is manufactured with a fuel-saving piston shut-off mode that conserves fuel when idling or coasting on the highway at low RPMs.
As the premium model for the Dodge Ram brand, the remodeled Laramie Limited will have a base price of around $50,000. With the addition of taxes, destination fees and the long list of options and accessories, the truck could exceed $60,000. To address consumer demand, officials from Ram stated some 2500 and 3500 heavy-duty trucks will come with standard chrome from the showroom on the front and rear bumpers.
The remodeling of the Dodge Ram comes as their rivals, Ford, Chevrolet, and GMC have announced a new top-of-the-line model for their light-duty trucks. The Limited Laramie luxury pickup will be available for sale during the second quarter of 2015.
