Earthquake of M 5.4 in the Southern Atlantic Region

An earthquake measuring M 5.4 has been reported a few minutes ago, approximately 26 miles North of Visokoi Island, South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands Region. This has been confirmed by the United States Geological Survey (USGS). The local time reported at the epicenter was Saturday, February 28, 2015 19:27 PM. At the moment, no tsunami warnings or alerts have been raised in the region. The geological and seismological data about the earthquake is being scanned as information pours in about the tremors.

All three islands are under the rule of the United Kingdom. The coordinates of the epicenter are 56.321S, 27.078W, which falls in the Southern Atlantic Ocean region. More information about the damages, injuries or loss of civilian life due to the earthquake is expected as the news breaks.

The epicenter of the earthquake is close to 1595 miles East South-East of Ushuaia, Argentina. It is about 1281 miles East South-East of Stanley, Falkland Islands, which is also governed by the United Kingdom. These islands are considered to be the British Overseas Territory.
