Talent today is being discovered throughout all different mediums; Justin Beiber was discovered on YouTube. Fighting Gravity was discovered on America’s Got Talent. Carrie Underwood and Chris Daughtry are still going strong from American Idol. Daniel Radcliffe was discovered for the role of Harry Potter when he was at the theatre with his parents, (Daniel Radcliffe – Details, n.d.). But I think we’ve found the first musical artist to be discovered without first showing a talent or certain look. You see, unlike Bieber or Carrie Underwood, it appears that Haley Marie Gardner’s path to stardom is quite different.
When Haley Marie Gardner posted on Twitter, “Does anyone want to produce my music?” The response she received shocked her. Many production companies are still contacting her a week later, but she has her heart set on Collide Studios in London. What makes this story so amazing is that no one has heard her sing!
Similar to Underwood, but unlike Bieber, Haley was conceived in the U.S. She was born in Manchester, New Hampshire, on May 30, 2000. The singer has very few memories of her father, but sees him occasionally as she has a half-sister from him that she has not seen or spoken to in three years. In 2008, Haley went with her father during the Christmas holidays, and was surprised when he told her that she had a baby sister. It was on this occasion that she met her younger sister for the first time.
Haley was angry because her father was taking care of her sister while it seemed as though he never had time for her. She was also scared that he might walk out on her little sister like he did when she was a baby. Her half-sister’s mom died when she fell out a window hanging curtains and talking on the phone. Her grandparents have custody now, giving Haley some piece of mind. She simply wanted to know that her sister would be alright.
Haley has been writing her own music since she was twelve years old as music has always been a coping skill for her. Gardner’s path to Stardom was born out of pain; quite a different road in contrast to Bieber and Underwood. Then she decided to put her pain, anger and frustration into her own compositions, making it something others could relate to. The first song she wrote was called, “Sky”. She put the lyrics from her heart to paper. When she had the lyrics the way she wanted, she downloaded a program off of the internet so that she could add rhythmic beats to complete the song. “I have been through so much,” Haley said. “But now I realize I am happy to be in this world.”
Haley is hoping to be able to do a project around love and family so she can share with the world who she is and how she became who she is today.
Haley Marie Gardner is putting together different songs to debut for Collide Studios. She is also thinking of how she wants her project to look and sound with Collide Studios. I talked to Haley for a little while just to see if she had the staying power of musicians from the 90’s and before. Haley told me, “People should be allowed to be themselves and express themselves as individuals.” Concerning “staying power,” Haley said; “If my music is produced, and it will be, I will deliver [it] to the world. I expect more from myself as I believe that I have what it takes. I’m in it for just for the music.” According to what we know about Bieber or Underwood, being in it for just the music, is an altogether different stardom path; one in which Haley seems to be quite proud of.
