Kanye West caused controversy at the Grammy Awards last night. It was just six years ago that he did something similar at the VMA Awards. It all happened while Beck accepted his award for Album of the Year.
Very much like the VMA Awards in 2009, West decided he did not agree with the winner of the Album of the Year award. It went to Beck for Morning Phase, but the rapper took the stage and tried to take the microphone. In the end, he avoided the microphone and walked away with a smile on his face. Rather than being annoyed, most of the audience just laughed, believing that it was all a joke.
While at the after-Grammy show with E!, West admitted that he was not joking after all. He was serious, and believed that Beck should not have received the award. He made it clear that for the “real artists to keep coming back,” the Grammys producers need to “stop playing with us.”
He also said that Beck should respect artistry, and that the award should have been given to Beyonce. However, it was not just the recipient of the award that annoyed the rapper. He said that running music over someone’s speech because of commercial advertising was also causing problems.
West caused controversy at the Grammys for his actions, but said that he was just fighting for creativity. However, he was not putting his daughter at risk, and he still had his clothing line to fall back on. His daughter was the only reason he stopped on the stage but did not say anything. He assumed that people would know what he meant just by getting up there.
It was a very similar situation to six years ago at the VMAs, while West was offended at Taylor Swift getting Best Female Video. While she took the stage to accept the award, the 36-year-old got up and started shouting how she did not deserve to win.
Swift reportedly told friends that she did not like the man because of that moment in 2009. However, it turns out that the two seem to have buried the hatchet. They were spotted together, posing and smiling for the cameras, during the Grammys.
West did later apologize to Swift for his actions, but he did not really mean it. He said that he apologized due to peer pressure, not that he believed that he was in the wrong. He still stood by the words he said at the VMAs, and he will still stand by his words uttered after the Grammy Awards Show on February 8.
West was certainly playing the race card during the Grammy Awards. He said that he has never won against a white artist, despite having 21 Grammys to his name.
The 36-year-old was not the only one disappointed in Beck winning. Wife Kim Kardashian and sister Khloe Kardashian shared a photo on social media with their upset faces. However, it was not as much controversy as West caused by getting on the stage and then telling everyone that it was not a joke.
