Two members of Nicki Minaj’s road crew were stabbed outside of a Philadelphia bar early Wednesday morning, leaving one dead and the other in critical condition. Reportedly, a disagreement began inside the Che Bar & Grill around 2:30 a.m., which carried over outside to Stenton Avenue where the men were stabbed multiple times. De’Von Pickett, known as Day Day, was killed while Eric Parker was left fighting for his life.
According to Captain James Clark of the Philadelphia Police Department, Minaj’s crew members decided to go to the bar with friends on Tuesday night. They got into a verbal altercation with other males who were at the restaurant, which quickly escalated into a physical issue. Not long after the confrontation began, one of the opposing males pulled out a knife and stabbed both Pickett and Parker several times.
The victims, 29-year-old Pickett and 27-year-old Parker, were in town rehearsing for Minaj’s tour. Both men were taken in a private vehicle to Einstein Medical Center. Pickett, who lived in N.Y., was working as the rapper’s tour manager. Minaj expressed her condolences via Instagram, saying, “Two days ago these guys arrived in Philly for my tour rehearsals and were both stabbed last night. #RIPDAYDAY condolences to your family. This is Unbelievable.”
Minaj, born Onika Tanya Maraj, was born in Trinidad and raised in New York. She is a rapper, record producer, songwriter, singer and actress. Minaj signed a recording contract with Young Money Entertainment in 2009 and has garnered much success in the entertainment industry.
After the stabbing, the men who assaulted Minaj’s crew members fled the scene. Police have interviewed witnesses to the murder and have analyzed surveillance video of the crime scene. They have confirmed one man is in custody and two others are still being searched for in connection with the stabbing.
Several people in the entertainment industry took to social media to express their condolences and fond memories of both of Minaj’s crew members; especially of Day Day, who was killed. Rapper Fabolous stated he has worked with both of the victims and the news of their stabbings has made his heart heavy. He asked his Instagram followers to say a prayer for Parker to pull through and to send blessings, and added RIP to the fallen soldier, Day Day. He added, “My friend @daydaydoesdis died & my friend Eric Parker is in critical condition in the hospital fighting for his life. I am still in shock & don’t want to believe this. It hurts even more knowing how good these two dudes are, how hard these guys work and how loyal they are to whoever they are down with and to each other.”
According to Pickett’s pastor, Reverend David Wright, neither of Minaj’s crew members was involved in the fight, which began inside the bar. Both men were sitting outside in a car when they spotted a woman who appeared to be in distress. The victims were walking the woman to her car when they were attacked by the other men, who they did not know. Pickett, Minaj’s tour manager, was stabbed twice, in his heart and stomach. He died upon his arrival to the hospital. Wright is the pastor of Grace Tabernacle Christian Center in Crown Heights, Brooklyn. De’Von “Day Day”Pickett was Minaj’s tour manager, along with several other celebrities.
