Pretty Little Liars: Oh, What Hard Luck Stories They All Hand Me [Review]

Pretty Little Liars

Oh, What Hard Luck Stories They All Hand Me brought Johnny back in Pretty Little Liars. It’s difficult to tell what to make of him at the moment. The writers never bring someone in without a bigger plan, whether as a way to help the girls or to help A. It seems Johnny may be on the side of the Liars.

This week, he builds an installation, which Spencer believes is brilliant. It turns the people into tuning forks, powered by their secrets since, as he noted, Rosewood is fuelled by the secrets. If only he really knew—or does he? It does lead to an exchange between Talia and Emily, hinting that there is something between them.

Holbrook makes a reappearance in this week’s Pretty Little Liars, which was about time. At the same time, another new face turns up. Leslie is apparently a friend of Mona’s; one that nobody has heard of before. Of course, that leads to instant suspicion. When does something like that not, especially when she was not at the funeral? It turns out that Leslie was taking exams that could not be rescheduled.

The show is trying to keep Mona alive, by using flashbacks to tell the story of how she and Leslie knew each other. There are moments that make her and Mona sound typically like A, especially the moment of wanting to control people without them realizing. When they go to The Brew, they run into Mike, who is clearly struggling with Mona’s death. Leslie believes that Mona saw Mike the day before her death.

Nothing can ever be simple in Pretty Little Liars, and Oh, What Hard Luck Stories They All Hand Me adds some more questions. Mike visited Alison in jail and nobody knows why. It leads to Aria following her brother, but she does not get answers. He tells her that it is none of her business and tells her to “be careful going home through the woods.” That did not sound creepy or threatening at all.

There was a book that Mike was annoyed at Hanna taking, and it turns out an audio tape was inside. It was of a therapy session with Bethany, where she talks about how long it would take for someone to want to drown kittens. The Pretty Little Liars assume she is talking about Alison.

It turns out that Holbrook is on suspension from the force, and he blames Alison and her friends. He does still have his police car, though, and pulls Hanna over. He tells her that he is really on a special assignment and wants to know how Alison became the girl she is. Despite previously wanting to get away from Alison, Hanna sticks up for her once-friend, telling him that he is the grown up and cannot play victim.

There are many more questions coming out, which is not surprising at the moment. Oh, What Hard Luck Stories They All Hand Me made it clear that nobody is safe or off the suspect list in Pretty Little Liars.
