Rosie O’Donnell has announced that she is splitting up with wife Michelle Rounds. They have been married for two and a half years. She made the announcement shortly before confirming that she would be leaving talk show The View.
A rep for O’Donnell announced that the couple decided to end their marriage in November. They have an infant and teenagers in their home, and the talk show host wants to focus on raising them after this split. It is stressful, and has meant that she needs to leave the daytime show. The comedian told viewers on Friday that she would not return. Next week will be the last on the show, and ABC has supported her decision to leave. She needs to put her family and own health before her work at this time.
The 52-year-old has two daughters and a son, Chelsea, Vivienne and Blake, from her first marriage. She also has Parker, who was adopted in 1995. In 2013, she and Rounds chose to adopt baby Dakota. It was just a year after their wedding in June.
O’Donnell married Kelli Carpenter first, but that marriage broke down in 2007. The comedian only confirmed the breakdown two years later. Then in 2011 she started dating Rounds and married after two years of dating. O’Donnell’s rep confirmed the split from Rounds, and the comedian also announced that she would leave The View after next week.
It is disappointing for ABC producers. The 52-year-old has been full of passion and excitement for the show. She is always full of ideas, and very talented according to a statement from ABC. Bridges have not been burned, so there is the possibility of her returning to the show sometime in the future, once her personal life allows for it.
This is not the first time she has left the show. In 2006, she debuted as a moderator. Unfortunately, she and the producers could not agree on her new contract, and she left in 2007. The comedian had not finished her contract, and left after an argument on-air with Elizabeth Hasselbeck, but she did say that she did not get on well with the executive producer at the time. She returned last year after a major overhaul on the show’s co-hosts, when three left at the same time.
O’Donnell is not completely leaving TV screens. She will appear on The Fosters as a guest star. ABC believes she will return to The View now and again, so she can share her opinion and offer updates on her family and work lives.
It has not been easy for O’Donnell and Rounds. They struggled when Rounds was diagnosed with desmoids tumors in August 2012. That same month, the comedian suffered from a heart attack. The health problems put a strain on their relationship, but they managed to get through them. There has been no confirmation over the reason for the breakup and nobody has stated whether they will co-parent their adopted daughter. The only statement released is that O’Donnell and Rounds have split after two and a half years of marriage.
