Stephen Colbert will be a Catholic father on The Mindy Project in a bearded guest-starring role before he takes over the reins of The Late Show from David Letterman, who has hosted the show for over 21 years, this coming September. Colbert will play Father Michael O’Donnell on the Fox sitcom which stars comedienne Mindy Kaling, 35.
Producers of The Mindy Project have not stated exactly when the episode, or episodes, featuring the guest appearance by Stephen Colbert, 50, will air. However, the comedian will likely not appear in very many episodes, as he will be hosting The Late Show in the fall. His beard in the show will be his real one, and looks decidedly gray.
Stephen Colbert grew his salt-and-pepper beard after he finished the final episode of The Colbert Report‘s 11-season run on Comedy Central. Colbert won nine Emmys while hosting The Colbert Report. He explained to E! News that he “was curious” to find out what he would look like with a beard, saying “it turns out it’s this.”
There has not been word if Stephen Colbert will decide to keep his beard when he takes over at the Late Show on September 8, 2015. If he did, he would be joining the likes of Conan O’Brien, who grew a beard which he had for his debut on TBS.
The execs at Comedy Central had to find a replacement for Stephen Colbert not that long ago, choosing Larry Wilmore, the “senior black correspondent” for The Daily Show With Jon Stewart. The show’s name has been changed to The Minority Report with Larry Wilmore. Now, the execs will also have to search for a replacement for Jon Stewart, who stated that he would step down from hosting The Daily Show sometime in 2015 just two months after Stephen Colbert left The Colbert Report.
On the hit Fox sitcom The Mindy Project, Mindy Kaling is an executive producer and writer as well as starring in the role of Ob/Gyn doctor Mindy Lahiri. In a photo that she tweeted out, along with the announcement that Stephen Colbert would be on her show, she and Colbert are standing side by side, and he is dressed for his role as Father Michael O’Donnell. Stephen Colbert is wearing a black cassock with a white clerical collar. They look like they are in a church.
Stephen Colbert, who co-created the TV series Strangers With Candy and who also acted in the 2008 comedy film The Love Guru with Mike Myers, is a big fan of the novel The Hobbit and the movie franchise derived from it. In 2014, Stephen Colbert hosted a Comic-Con panel wearing a Hobbit costume. He also interviewed Benedict Cumberbatch, who provided the voice of Smaug the dragon in The Hobbit movies, on The Colbert Report.
Fans of both Stephen Colbert and The Mindy Project will be eagerly looking forward to Colbert’s upcoming guest starring appearance, or possibly appearances, on the Fox sitcom. He will be guest starring as Catholic Father Michael O’Donnell in a role that will most likely be a very memorable one.
