An Amtrak train accident has occurred today in Halifax County, North Carolina. Law enforcement officials and emergency responders are currently on scene to what has been reported as an accident involving a truck at a railroad crossing near U.S. Highway 301 and N.C. Highway 903.
Ted Camarata, a passenger on the train, said the train is the Amtrak Carolinian, traveling from Raleigh to Philadelphia. However, transportation officials have not yet confirmed this travel plan and information. Camarata had sent pictures which appear to show at least one derailed train car on its side, following the accident.
The Daily Herald in Roanoke Rapids, North Carolina, stated the Amtrak train crashed into a transfer truck at the railroad crossing. Moreover, they said one of the train’s engine cars was on its side.
Law enforcement officials and emergency responders are currently at the scene, and have closed U.S. Highway 301 and N.C. Highway 301 in both directions, a detour has been put into place. Injuries have not yet been reported.
