It has been announced that Saturday Night Live (SNL) alum and Emmy winning actor, Andy Samberg will be hosting the 67th annual Emmy Awards this September. The Emmys will air on FOX on September 20. Samberg stars in FOX’s award winning show Brooklyn Nine-Nine, which won Samberg a Golden Globe for best actor in a comedy series, and is a member of the musical comedy troupe Lonely Island, with fellow comedians Jorma Taccone and Akiva Schaffer. So far no producers have been named for the Emmys as of yet, but they will be announced soon. The nominees for the awards will be announced on the morning of Thursday, July 16.
Over recent years, the Emmys have looked toward fresher talent to take hosting duties. Last year, Seth Meyers was chosen as host and was given favorable reviews. This year, the Emmys look to Samberg, to bring his unique humor and skill set to this year’s award ceremony. Not only does Samberg have a natural charisma and on stage presence, but he has skills behind the camera, especially with his writing. At this point it is not clear if Samberg will have any writing duties for the award show, but it would not be surprising to see Samberg doing some behind the camera work.
Back in 2007, Samberg and The Lonely Island comedy troupe, received an Emmy for staring and co-writing a SNL music video about a certain body part in a box. The video featured Justin Timberlake, as well as the rest of The Lonely Island. Samberg is no stranger to performing at award shows, having recently performed the Lego Movie theme at this years Academy Awards.
The executives at FOX are more than confident in Sambergs’ ability to host. FOX Entertainment Group CEOs and chairmen Dana Walden and Gary Newman were quoted saying, “The moment the Emmy Awards’ host was brought up, we said it had to be Andy. He is fearless, hilarious, an award-winning comedian, singer, writer and actor with incredible live TV experience. We know he’ll deliver the laughs and give viewers an incredible night they will enjoy.” FOX also has a contract signed with the members of The Lonely Island as of 2014 to develop a new series.
FOX is hoping that with Samberg as host they will attract a much younger audience to this years Emmy awards. Samberg’s unique brand of humor definitely has the chance to bring in a younger audience, but whether this brand of humor will alienate older audiences remains to be seen. Samberg himself has already made an announcement to fans concerning his new hosting duties, telling fans and Emmy viewers to “buckle their seat belts.”
Expect appearances from the other members of The Lonely Island as well as other SNL alumni. Samberg is definitely looking to make these Emmy awards one to remember. This will be Samberg’s first opportunity to host with this year’s Emmy awards, and if he succeeds in bringing in a younger audience it may very well be the first of many hosting opportunities for him.
