According to local officials on the scene, three bombings have rocked individual civilian targets in Maiduguri Nigeria, located in the northeast of the country, on Saturday, killing 33 people. Local law enforcement officials are led to believe these are terrorist attacks.
The initial attack was carried out by a female suicide bomber at around 11:20 a.m. local time, killing 18 people in the downtown area near the Baga Fish Market. In an another report from a health worker and other eyewitnesses in the area, another bombing took place an hour afterwards at the Monday Market, again in the downtown area, killing 15 people.
Borno state Justice Commissioner Kaka Shehu had just confirmed the validity of the two bombings when a third bomb rocked the overbusy Borno Express bus station right after 1:00 p.m. local time. Injuries and casualties have not yet been reported from the third location. Local law enforcement and Nigerian officials are on the scene determining who carried out these egregious attacks. A high state of alert for additional terrorist attacks has ensued.
