An explosion at an apartment building in the East Village of Manhattan, in New York City, has caused a raging inferno, resulting in a partial collapse of the building. The flames from the building have spread to another apartment next door. Initial reports stated the explosion could have been caused by a gas leak.
According to eye witnesses and first responders, people may still be trapped inside in structure. A New York Fire Department (FDNY) official said one person has already been taken to the hospital. The FDNY’s twitter account stated the explosion caused a seven-alarm fire. At least 179 first responders from 39 units have been dispatched to control the inferno.
The East Village building is of mixed occupancy, with a few businesses of the first floor and residential units in the floors above. No other reports have come out regarding the official cause of the explosion, or how many people have been injured.
