Hugh Jackman Will Play Wolverine One Last Time

Hugh Jackman is set to play Wolverine one last time. The star is reportedly looking to hang up the adamantium claws after one final X-Men movie. The movie will be the reported sequel of the last solo Wolverine movie The Wolverine. Wolverine will still be making an appearance in X-Men: Age of Apocalypse which will be premiering in 2016, and will also feature the last appearance of Jennifer Lawrence as Mystique. Jackman has been playing Wolverine since the 2000 movie X-Men and has appeared as the fan favorite mutant in seven films. X-Men: Age of Apocalypse will be the follow up to last years X-Men: Days of Future Past.

Jackman made the announcement in a round about way on Instagram. He had posted a picture with the caption “WOLVERINE …ONE LAST TIME”. This is fairly disappointing for fans of Jackman’s portrayal of Wolverine. It is possible that the studio will be recasting the character with a younger actor because of contract disputes with Jackman, or this could finally be the end of the character’s appearances on the big screen.

It is looking as though fans will never get to see Jackman as Wolverine, standing next to The Avengers. Even though that scenario was unlikely, the fact that Marvel is bringing Spider-Man to the Avengers franchise opened the door for a possible crossover between the X-Men and The Avengers. Although it is possible that this could still happen later down the line, it will most likely be another actor in the role, with Jackman hinting that this will be the last time he will be playing Wolverine.

This is unfortunate especially since Jackman stated in February that he would like to continue playing Wolverine for as long as he possibly can. He said that he was sure that they would eventually recast the role at some point, but he wanted to continue playing the fan favorite mutant Wolverine until the day he died. All good things must come to an end though and his portrayal of Wolverine is seen as iconic, he will be forever linked to the character in many people’s minds.

It now remains to be seen whether or not they will give a concrete ending to Wolverine’s saga in the last film. It is rare though that an actor remains with a role for so long. In many super hero films the actors typically do not stick around very long. This is mostly due to the fact that these stories are constantly being rebooted.

With seven films under his belt as Wolverine, Jackman has done something that one just does not see with many super hero franchises. His name will be the first that comes to mind when people talk about the big screen portrayal of Wolverine, and this is unfortunate for any other actor that decides to take the role after he departs the franchise. The last time we will be seeing Jackman on the big screen as Wolverine will be in 2017 when the sequel to The Wolverine is released. Now that it is known that Jackman will only play Wolverine one last time, it is now on the studios to find an actor who can bring to the table what he has for the last 15 years.
