Madonna and Elton John surprisingly wound up on the same side when they came out against fashion giants Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana. It has been known that the 2 performers were openly at odds since 2002, when the latter publicly accused the Queen of Pop of lip-synching. Over this period of time, the attacks grew heated, with Elton “Reg” John slamming Madonna’s music for “not having a tune,” and less than 3 years ago disparaged her as “a fairground stripper” and other times as a “miserable cow” while not holding back any expletives. The famed British artist had since apologized, and is on the front lines of a boycott against Dolce Gabbana who told an Italian magazine in an interview that children conceived out of alternate methods were “synthetic.” Among others involved in the boycott against the fashion company are performers, Courtney Love and Ricky Martin, as well as the retired 8 time WTA Championship winner, Martina Navratilova.
The feud, which Madonna has also supported, though she herself has not joined the boycott, originated when Panorama magazine asked Domenico Dolce a question relating to children. The designer responded that procreation is supposed to come out of love of two – a mother and a father rather than synthetic. He referred to this as chemistry, in which he included surrogate mothers, and went on to denounce “seeds from a catalogue,” and “rented uteruses” as unacceptable approaches to procreation.
Dolce and Gabbana have been in a relationship for more than 20 years; and while Stefano Gabbana has expressed his desire to father a child, Dolce has stated that his is in agreement with the course of nature. Elton John, who has children, took immediate offense. The pop idol slammed the two designers for daring to refer to his children as “synthetic,” and went on to accuse the two of “archaic” thinking.
Although Madonna has supported John, other artists, and celebrities in their opposition to Dolce’s remark, she has not joined them in their boycott, but instead, posted her views of procreation on her Instagram account. The performer is currently an active participant in the Jewish faith, and is quite open about her religious and spiritual beliefs. Earlier this month, she celebrated the Jewish festival of Purim, where she donned a costume and mask along with her 2 children, Lourdes and Rocco. The Jewish religion Madonna practices centers around the sacredness of human life, and the divinity of the soul. Madonna, who regularly practices the Kabbalah, a form of Jewish mysticism, believes that the creation of all life comes from a single source. Using images of herself from past campaigns with the same company, Madonna spoke about the sacredness of babies regardless of how they are conceived, stating that “they all contain a soul,” and that there is nothing “synthetic” about the outcome. She went on to suggest that every soul is created in order to bring to us a lesson.
In response to Madonna and other artists, Dolce and Gabbana issued somewhat of a rebuttal, stating that they believed in love, freedom, and democracy. Defending himself, Dolce stated that he was only discussing his personal view, which was influenced through his own upbringing in a traditional Italian family. He stated that it was never his intention to judge the choices and decisions of others.
