Marketing is how one promotes themselves, their brand or their product. For authors, it is especially important to pay attention to marketing, as this is what helps to get word out about not only previously written books, but also the ones coming out in the future. There are any number of techniques, tips or guidelines that will help promote one’s product. Not every idea will work and depending on what one writes, it is important to tailor your marketing to the audience you want to reach. The following is a list of marketing tips for authors that can help as a guide to reaching a broader audience.
Take advantage of social media
Social media is an important tool in marketing. Not only are most social media accounts free to use but they also help connect people all over the world. Having access to Twitter, Facebook, Tsu, Instagram and other platforms, will allow an author a chance to interact with readers, while also promoting current and upcoming works.
Reviews are free advertisement
There are any number of sites that offer reviewing services, plus any reader can post a review of a book to sites such as Amazon, Barnes & Noble or Goodreads. Reviews really are a free form of advertisement for authors. It is a chance to get word out about a book, without having to spend money out of pocket. At most, the author might give a few copies of their book to review sites for an honest review. This is especially true in the case of self publishing, since there is not a publisher promoting the book, or connecting with reviewers to get the book out to the public. Reviews are free marketing materials for authors.
Connect with the readers
There are any number of ways for an author to connect with their readers. This includes using social media to interact with followers. Actively using Facebook and Twitter will generate conversations amongst readers and word will spread about the author’s work. Set up a newsletter and make sure that the website is up to date with the latest releases and what books are coming soon. Readers will look for this information. Be creative when attempting to connect with the readers. Blog posts, video blogs, Facebook events and other interactive online events, will inspire interest and garner more views. Readers appreciate when the authors connect with them and keep them informed.
Make the fan base a community
The readers are an author’s fan base and giving them a community experience will foster a sense of family. When a reader feels like they are part of a community, they are more likely to promote the author. There are any numbers of ways to create this experience for the readers. Having a Facebook page or group in which readers can discuss the books and characters is a great way to build a community. Discussions do not have to be limited to the books but this is a great starting point to building a reader base.
Although this is only a very short list of tips to marketing an author’s work, these are essential to getting the word out, especially for individuals who self publish. Readers bring in more readers. They share with their family and friends and this means more books sold and a new web of potential fans. Marketing is not always about spending a lot of money, instead it is about knowing who the audience is and how to reach them.
