MTV Movie Awards

MTV Movie AwardsThe MTV Movie Awards will air on April 12 at 8 pm.  Amy Schumer, an American stand-up comedian, writer, producer, and actress, will be this year’s host.  She is best known for placing fourth on the fifth season of NBC’s “Last Comic Standing”, and second on Comedy Central’s “Reality Bites Back”.

Comedy is the theme for the MTV Movie Awards, with entertainers like Conan O’Brien, Rebel Wilson and Russell Brand hosting the show the past few years.  While the Oscars are often criticized for being disconnected with the audience, more often awarding for dramatic pictures, the MTV Movie Awards nominees are more audience friendly, with categories that range from Best Picture to Best Actor/Actress to more fun categories like Best Shirtless Moment to Best Kiss.

Some of the categories that the Academy Awards recognizes that the MTV Movie Awards does not give awards to are Best Animated Short Film, Best Cinematography, Best Costume Design, Best Documentary Feature, Best Makeup and Hairstyling, Best Original Score, Best Original Song, Best Production Design, Best Sound Editing, Best Sound Mixing, and Best Visual Effects.

The Academy Awards are an important part of the movie industry.  They recognize and honor the craft and skills of actors, cinematography, and the artistry of the creators, writers, producers, engineers and other innovators of the industry.  The presence of the MTV Movie Awards does not replace the Academy Awards, nor does it take away from the celebration and prestige of winning an Oscar.

Some of the categories that the MTV Movie Awards recognizes that you won’t see at the Academy Awards are Best Dance Sequence, Best Spoof, Best Sandwich in a Movie and Best Line, as well as a few more off the wall categories.

There is some crossover between the Academy Awards and the MTV Movie Awards.  For example, “American Sniper”, “Selma”, “Whiplash”, and “Boyhood” were nominated as Best Picture for the Academy Awards and Movie of the Year for the MTV Movie Awards.  “The Imitation Game”, “The Grand Budapest Hotel” and “Birdman or (The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance)” were Academy Award nominees as well.  On the flip side, “The Hunger Games Mockingjay Part 1”, “Guardians of the Galaxy”, “Gone Girl” and “The Fault in Our Stars” were nominees for the MTV Movie Awards.

Instead, the MTV Movie Awards offers an opportunity for less conventional roles and artistry to be recognized and honored for their work more often than not labeled as popular culture.  Talent isn’t limited to dramatic acting.  Comedy, action, horror and science fiction can all be recognized, not to mention the honor of being nominated for having a superb chest as were Zac Efron, Chris Pratt, Channing Tatum, Ansel Elgort, and Kate Upton.

An award is an award, whether it carries the full honor of receiving an Oscar, the pride of winning a Golden Globe or the embarrassing weight of winning (or losing) a Razzie or the pleasure of winning a MTV Movie Award.  For those in the entertainment industry, the goal is to have their name in lights and to be publically recognized for their work.  The MTV Movie Awards does that for many who chose roles or a genre that will not get them recognized by the Academy Awards.
