The family of James McNair, a friend of Tracy Morgan, who was killed last summer in a tragic accident involving a Wal-Mart truck hitting Morgan’s luxury van he was riding in, received a $10 million settlement so that the retail giant’s incident will not go into litigation. According the court’s papers, Wal-Mart paid out such a large sum of money to the family of McNair to avoid potential losses from court costs and bad public relations.
The settlement states McNair’s two children, Denita, 19, and Jamel, 26, will receive a combined $7 million after the family’s lawyer, Daryl Zaslow, takes a cut of almost $3 million. McNair’s children sued Wal-Mart following the incident when a transport truck struck the luxury van carrying him, Morgan, and a few other comedians traveling on the New Jersey turnpike on June 7, 2014.
Kevin Roper, the driver of truck, was charged by New Jersey police with death by automobile and four other vehicle-related assault charges. Morgan, who suffered from a brain injury due to the accident, is currently seeking to sue Wal-Mart as well.
