Secret Service officials have locked down the White House grounds this morning, due to a suspicious vehicle nearby that prompted an investigation. According to the Secret Service, a sniffer dog alerted them about a vehicle parked in the 1600 block of Constitution Avenue, earlier this morning. The White House lockdown was put into effect at 10:00 a.m. local time.
After a press release was given, the lockdown appeared to be to be caused by a smoke or fire issue with a food vendor cart at the intersection of 15th street and G street. Before the incident, a loud noise was reported to have been heard outside the White House grounds. At that time, President Obama and the first family were in the South Lawn, ready to get onto Marine One for their departure to Selma, Alabama, commemorating the 50th anniversary of the civil rights march.
At around 10:25 a.m., Secret Service officers allowed reporters to enter into the press room. According to one of the initial reports, a serviceman stated, “It is not over but the door is unlocked.” Though, the press room was locked once more just minutes afterwards. Meanwhile, Secret Service officials were at attention by their vehicles and patrolling the grounds around the White House. An official statement regarding the confirmed cause of the lockdown at the White House has yet to be released.
