The Late Late Show on CBS has a new host in actor James Corden. The actor has taken over the hosting role from Craig Ferguson, who stepped down after 10 years on the show. Some may wonder who Corden is and how he came to be the new host of a late night talk show. While he may not be a household name in the United States (U.S.), the British actor is not only an award winner, but he can also be considered a movie star.
Anyone who has seen Into the Woods with Meryl Streep, Johnny Depp, Chris Pine and Anna Kendrick, should recognize Corden for his role as the Baker in the movie. He was also the narrator for the film. Along with his role in Into the Woods, the actor has also had parts in such movies as, Gulliver’s Travels, The Three Musketeers and the upcoming The Lady in the Van. Corden has also had a number of roles on Broadway, in such plays as The History Boys and One Man, Two Guvnors. For the latter play, the new host won a Tony Award in 2012 for Best Actor in a Play.
While Corden’s acting abilities are enough to garner him attention, it still might leave viewers of the Late Late Show wondering how and why he became host of the program. Even the actor himself has questioned the choice that CBS made to give him the gig. In an interview prior to his debut on air, the actor said he never thought he would even be a contender for the role as host of a late night talk show, especially one following David Letterman. Although he may not sound confident, the actor also said that only time would tell if the decision to give him the job was a good idea. Corden admits that the shows never start out exactly how they end up, it is a building and learning process.
On Monday night, Corden stepped into the role of Late Late Show host and showcased just who he is and why he deserved the job. Even before the actor stepped into the role of host, he wanted his show to be different from the rest of the late night talk shows. The new host said he wanted his show to be both inclusive and fun. It appears that he started off as he wanted to.
The newly minted talk show host made his debut with guest stars Mila Kunis and Tom Hanks. Instead of sitting behind a desk, the actor sat with the stars. Corden even did a skit with Hanks to showcase some of the veteran actor’s most memorable movies. Questions were asked, a monologue was done and the usual aspects of a late night talk show were all present. The only thing missing was the snark that so many people interject into their hosting.
While some reviewers of the show gave the actor credit for being personable and energetic, others were not as impressed. Reviewers of the Late Late Show are not yet sold on Corden as host, and still wonder if he is who the show needs. In the meantime, viewers can see the actor in his latest role on CBS late night.
