Academy of Country Music Awards: Luke Bryan Wins Biggest Award

Academy of Country Music Awards

The 50th Academy of Country Music Awards (ACM) on CBS, held in Arlington, Texas at the AT&T Stadium, hosted by Blake Shelton and Luke Bryan, brought out the hottest country stars around. Miranda Lambert was one of the top picks up for the coveted Entertainer of the Year Award, but it was won by Luke Bryan.

Before the awards show even began, Lambert was surprised by the Guinness Book of World Records with the distinction of having the most consecutive wins as ACM Female Vocalist of the Year. Brad Paisley was also honored by them as having the most consecutive wins as ACM Male Vocalist of the Year, according to the ACM website.

The crowd was rocking as hosts Blake Shelton and Luke Bryan introduced the Academy of Country Music Awards. Eric Church and Keith Urban were the first live musical act to perform. Church and Urban sang a song to honor Merle Haggard, Pledge Allegiance to the Hag. The audience was on their feet the entire time. Then, Keith Urban sang Raise ‘Em Up.

Blake said “They say that everything is bigger in Texas!” They were at the event’s biggest venue yet, and at the world’s Most Attended Live Musical Event ever, according to the Guiness Book of World records. Then they introduced George Strait.

George Strait sang All My Ex’s Live in Texas. The audience cheered him on, enthusiastically, as King George performed. The next song that he sang was Let It Go. The audience clapped and sang along with Strait, one of the most beloved country musicians of all time.

The hosts presented George Strait with the Academy of Country Music Awards Milestone Award. He thanked the academy and his fans, “and all you guys for coming tonight.”

After a commercial break, Florida Georgia Line took the stage. They performed the hit song, Sippin’ on Fire. There was fire all around the stage, literally heating up their performance and, likely, the fans in front of the stage.

The Academy of Country Music Awards show award for Song of the Year was the first big award presented, after the Milestone award. The winner of the award was Miranda Lambert, for her hit song, Automatic. This was, perhaps, an early indication of other awards to come for Lambert.

Sam Hunt, up for New Artist of the Year Award, sang Take Your Time. Then, the Academy of Country Music Awards show went to another commercial break.

Next, Tony Romo introduced Dierks Bentley, singing Riser, from his album of the same name. Bentley began the song in a kind of subdued way, but then, as he continued singing, his voice got louder and stronger, and the audience cheered him on as he sang.

The Band Perry then presented the Academy of Country Music Awards show award for Vocal Duo of the Year. It was won by…Florida Georgia Line.

Miss America then introduced Martina McBride. McBride performed the song Independence Day. She did not sound like she was properly miked up, though perhaps she was just singing softer than some of the other performers so far tonight. The audience sang along with McBride for parts of the song.

Following more commercials, on the Academy of Country Music Awards show, host Blake Shelton introduced his co-host, Luke Bryan, singing his hit I See You from his album, Crash My Party. He really got the huge audience into the song. They cheered and applauded enthusiastically.

Reese Witherspoon and Sofia Vergara were the next presenters. They talked about how Miranda Lambert wrote a song for their movie, Hot Pursuit. Then, they introduced Lambert, who sang two songs, Momma’s Broken Heart and Little Red Wagon. She rocked the stadium out, particularly with the second song, Little Red Wagon. Witherspoon and Vergara presented Lambert with the Milestone Award for winning the most consecutive awards for Female Vocalist of the Year.

Alabama were the next presenters, for the Academy of Country Music Awards show award for Vocal Group of the Year. The band that won was Little Big Town.

After yet another commercial break, host Luke Bryan introduced the musical artist, Jason Aldean. Aldean sang a couple of his songs, including She’s Country.

Reba McEntire then performed at the Academy of Country Music Awards show. McEntire sang a medley of her hit songs, including Fancy. She also sang Going Out Like That, one of her latest hits.

When the Academy of Country Music Awards show returned, Little Big Town performed their current huge hit, Girl Crush. The song began kind of softly, but melodically. It is a pretty cool song. They did a stripped-down version, featuring primarily the keyboards.

Taylor Swift then was honored with yet another Milestone Award on the Academy of Country Music Awards show. Taylor’s mother, Andrea Swift, presented her with the prestigious award. Her mom talked about how Taylor came up with the song, Love Story, after her mom and dad expressed their disapproval of a boy that she liked.

Swift went up onto the stage and hugged her mom. She talked about the “grace,” that the country community showed when she said that she was going to make pop music albums.

Next up performing at the Academy of Country Music Awards show was Thomas Rhett, singing Make Me Wanna. Then, Blake Shelton sang his hit, Sangria. He did a great job singing this amazing song.

Luke Bryan, after more commercials, introduced Rascal Flatts and Christina Aguilera. They performed Aguilera’s song, Shotgun, and also Rascal Flatts’ song, Riot, together. Shotgun was written for Aguilera’s brief stint on the TV series, Nashville.

Finally, another actual award was presented on the Academy of Country Music Awards show, the award for Album of the Year. The winner of the award was…Platinum, by country singer, Miranda Lambert. That was yet more good news for Lambert tonight.

Then, another Milestone Award was presented, this one going to country music legend, Garth Brooks. He sang All-American Kid. It was a touching tribute to the members of America’s armed forces. Brooks thanked “all the men and women in our Armed Forces that are here.” He thanked everyone in his “home state of Oklahoma,” also.

Then, the Academy of Country Music Awards show award for New Artist of the Year was presented. The musical artist who won the award was Cole Swindell. A couple of awards that were not shown during the show was one for Video of the Year, won by Dierks Bentley for Drunk On a Plane, and another for Vocal Event of the Year. It was won by Florida Georgia Line for This Is How We Roll.

After more commercials, the Academy of Country Music Awards show award was presented for Female Vocalist of the Year. It was won by — who else — Miranda Lambert.

Eric Church introduced the next musical performer, Kenny Chesney. Chesney sang Wild Child and he was presented with another Milestone Award. Chesney also won the first Entertainer of the Year Award.

Lady Antebelum was the musical group to perform next on the Academy of Country Music Awards show. The song they performed was Long Stretch of Love.

The award presented on the Academy of Country Music Awards show for Single of the Year was next. It was won by the Lee Brice song, I Don’t Care.

Nick Jonas then sung his hits, Jealous and Chains, along with Dan Shay. The songs are not, technically, country music songs; but, the audience received the performance very enthusiastically.

Trisha Yearwood presented the Academy of Country Music Awards show award for Male Vocalist of the Year. The award was won by Jason Aldean. It marked his third year in a row to win this award.

Troy Aikman, former quarterback of the Dallas Cowboys, then took a few minutes to commemorate the Oklahoma bombing 20 years ago. He introduced musical artist, Alan Jackson, who sang Where Were You. Though it was not a song about the Oklahoma bombing, it was still a pretty fitting sort of song to commemorate the tragic bombing in Oklahoma, committed by home-grown terrorist, Timothy McVeigh.

After still more commercials, Brad Paisley took the stage. He performed the song Crushin’ It. Then, Keith Urban introduced the vocal duo, Brooks & Dunn, making a special reunion for the Academy of Country Music Awards show. They sang one of their many hits, My Maria. It was a terrific performance, and they both were in fine voice for the show. Urban presented them with a Milestone Award for being the Greatest Country Music Duo in Country Music History.

The Academy of Country Music Awards show Entertainer of the Year Award was presented, for some reason, by the rock singer, Steven Tyler. The winner of the award was…not Miranda Lambert, but was Blake Shelton’s co-host, Luke Bryan. Miranda Lambert picked up several awards tonight, but the Entertainer of the Year Award eluded her. That award was presented right at the conclusion of the awards show.
