‘Apocalypse’: Will the New X-Men Live Up to Standards of Those Previous?

Earlier today, X-Men director Bryan Singer took to Instagram to release two all-new photos from the filming set of the newest series installment, Apocalypse. It contained actresses Lana Condor and Sophie Turner; Condor will be playing the role of Jubilee, and Turner is best known for her work on the critically acclaimed HBO show Game of Thrones and will be playing Jean Grey. The second photo contained only Condor herself, and has since been the discussion of many fans regarding the costume she is wearing. Another hot topic regarding the upcoming film is whether or not it will live up to the standards of those previous, in the past have been very high.

In regards to the outfit that Condor is wearing to play Jubilee, reactions are mixed. The coat is indeed yellow, but not so much a trench coat as per the comic books. Instead, it has a more leather style in order to better pair up with the theme of the moving, which is set in 1983. While some fans find this a nice balance between the two requirements, others feel it makes the character not look the same. To be fair in this circumstance, however, there will always be those certain fans who are never satisfied with the film or television adaptation of anything that was initially in print form, as they always find something to pick on and say is ‘not the same’.

New and unexpected casting is also being discussed in regards to whether or not X-Men: Apocalypse will live up to the infamy of the past installments. Although Rose Byrne and Jennifer Lawrence are not newcomers to the superhero saga, having played the role of Moira MacTaggert and Raven/Mystique in 2011’s X-Men: First Class, respectively (roles they will reprise in the Apocalypse installment of the series,) there are some new names on the cast listing for this movie.

The most significant new cast members are, of course, the aforementioned Condor and Turner. While the Game of Thrones actress, 18, has built up quite a fan base due to her role on the hit HBO show, some believe she is not quite ready to have the leading role in the newest installment of such a popular and legendary saga. Those anticipating X-Men: Apocalypse are concerned that the Northampton native’s lack of heavy acting experience will possibly make it so that the newest film installment of the series does not end up living up to the standards of those past.

As for Condor, her role in X:Men: Apocalypse will actually be her first appearance in anything. Indeed, information on the actress is somewhat difficult to find, but the website FilmSchoolRejects has since dug up something of a biography on the girl who will play Jubilation Lee. She is said to have been adopted by a man named Bob Condor, who at the time as a health and fitness writer at the Chicago Tribune. Her birth name is written as Tran Dong Lan, and her brother was adopted alongside her. Condor is an extremely accomplished dancer, having attended the infamous Joffrey Ballet School as well as Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, after which time she also performed with the Los Angeles Ballet.

Although the two new cast members do not have a lot of experience on screen, they certainly both have interesting pasts and at the very least will bring new and fresh faces to the legendary saga. Whether or not this will be enough to live up to the standards of those installments previous to X-Men: Apocalypse, however, remains to be seen. The film will be released on May 27, 2016.
