Grace and Frankie starring Jane Fonda and Lily Tomlin is a new comedy series that will begin streaming on Netflix on May 8. In their 70s, the two frenemies find that they must start their lives over, as their husbands, played by Martin Sheen and Sam Waterston, leave them. The catch is that they leave them for each other.
Jane Fonda plays Grace and Lily Tomlin plays the role of Frankie in the upcoming Netflix series. The two women find, to their initial annoyance, that their lives become forever intertwined. Jane Fonda and Sam Waterston acted together in the HBO series, The Newsroom, while Martin Sheen and Lily Tomlin starred together in West Wing. With all four together in this quirky TV series, there are sure to be a lot of great acting and comic situations that will attract a large fan base to this show. Previous to the West Wing, Jane Fonda and Lily Tomlin starred together with Dolly Parton in the 1980 movie, 9 to 5.
In the humorous trailer for Grace and Frankie below, the two women go through the five stages of grief and help each other out as they come to accept — with difficulty — that their husbands have left them to start a relationship of their own together. They tell their wives that they want to get married to each other.
The character that Martin Sheen plays says “We can do that now.”
Lily Tomlin, as Frankie, replies that she knows, saying “I hosted that fundraiser.”
Grace and Frankie is from the executive producer of Home Improvement, Howard Morris, and the executive producer of Friends, Marta Kaufmann. All four of the main stars, Martin Sheen, Jane Fonda, Sam Waterston and Lily Tomlin, are Emmy Award winners, and they all have proven by acting together in the past on West Wing that they have great chemistry together. The series will also star June Diane Raphael, Brooklyn Decker, Baron Vaughn, Geoff Stults and Ethan Embry.
Besides these actors, Ghostbusters star Ernie Hudson will be featured as the love interest of Frankie. Their interactions together will likely be pretty funny. Also, actor Barry Bostwick will play a newly-divorced man who becomes a close friend of Grace, as she tries to cope with the fact that her husband is gay and left her for not just any man, but the husband of her frenemy, Frankie.
As the series Grace and Frankie unfolds, the two title characters will find themselves drawn closer together, by the common ground that they share of their two husbands leaving them and starting a relationship together. When any close relationship, like a marriage, ends, it can be emotionally devastating.
At least, in this case, Grace and Frankie eventually learn that they can confide in each other about their shared experience, and bond together. Though the topics of the series are often those of dramatic TV series and movies, based on the brief clip below, the stars manage to draw a lot of humor from the changed relationships that happen during the course of events.
The Netflix comedy series, Grace and Frankie, will debut on Friday, May 8. Then, viewers will be able to stream all 13 of the episodes of season one. There is a lot of comedy that can be mined from the experiences and situations that Jane Fonda’s character, Grace, and Lily Tomlin’s, Frankie, face. Martin Sheen and Sam Waterston are also amazing actors, all of which makes Grace and Frankie one of the most-anticipated upcoming Netflix series.
