On March 30, the Roast of Justin Bieber was aired for all the world to see. The now 21-year-old singer celebrated his official coming into adulthood on March 14, with the help of Comedy Central as he was roasted by his fellow celebrities in Los Angeles, followed by a birthday celebration at the Omnia Night Club in Las Vegas, with hundreds of adoring fans and a lengthy celebrity guest list.
Bieber’s actual birthday was on March 1. He has been a teenage heart-throb since he emerged onto the music scene at the age of 12, when he was first discovered on YouTube.
Bieber was face-to-face with insults that many would have recognized from social media posts over the years at the Sony Pictures Studio filming of the roast. The special started with a tribute video that flashed between highlights in his music career, low times in his legal troubles, and the abandonment of his monkey, in 2013. Though, he was reunited with a similar capuchin monkey at the end of the Comedy Central special.
Kevin Hart hosted the event with comedic superiority, poking fun at Bieber’s past relationship with Selena Gomez and embarrassing moments that have been put on public display by many celebrity entertainment news outlets, including urinating in a bucket at a restaurant and according to Hart, “A fascination with black culture.” A variety of celebrities spoke on Bieber’s behalf by roasting him into adulthood including Martha Stewart, Snoop Dog, and Shaquille O’Neal, among many other A-lister’s. “You gotta straighten up, son. Last year you were ranked the fifth most-hated person of all time. Kim Jong Un didn’t even score that low,” O’Neil joked. “He uses your music to torture people,” he said.
The night was full of laughs as Bieber’s embarrassment was shared between other celebrities. Something that is not normally seen at Comedy Central’s roasts, but this night was unique as each one in attendance was roasted in their own private way. “All these rappers on the stage and Martha Stewart has done the most jail time,” Natasha Leggero joked. Leggero had jokes for each of the guests on stage including host Hart, who she applauded for doing his own stunts including getting into his own chair.
The roast was finished up with laughs and Bieber apologizing for the things he is not proud of, and vowed to turn over a new leaf. The singer went to Twitter the next day to show his appreciation for his fellow celebrities that roasted him, and to state again that he was ready for a new chapter in his life.
Rolling Stone reported today that Bieber is going to be making a new record with Kayne West and Rick Rubin that he promises is going to have a new grown up sound to it. Bieber reported that all the misfortune he has had in the past has caused him to scrap an entire album and start fresh. Being roasted into adulthood seems to have brought a new chapter to Bieber and to his “beliebers.”
