Nina Dobrev confirmed that she will be leaving The Vampire Diaries at the end of this season, and many fans have wondered whether Ian Somerhalder is to blame. Elena Gilbert fans want to know if their personal breakup led to issues on the set that means the two can no longer work together. There have certainly been rumors throughout the year that have indicated that.
At the end of season five, many wondered whether Somerhalder would be saying goodbye to the show. The season finale saw Damon stuck on the other side with witch Bonnie Bennett, and Elena was stuck in the land of the living. Those rumors quickly stopped, but then there were queries over whether the decision was made to keep Somerhalder and Dobrev apart on The Vampire Diaries’ set.
After their breakup, it seemed the two struggled to get along. This was especially reportedly problematic when Somerhalder started bringing new girlfriend Nikki Reed onto the set. Dobrev was reportedly uncomfortable and did not want to sign on for a seventh season if this was the way it was going to be.
According to Hollywood Life, the 35-year-old actor is the reason for Dobrev leaving. She feels that the set is too awkward, and it was either him or her. However, it is worth pointing out that the 26-year-old had made this decision back in August, according to statements from herself and Julie Plec. This was before all the rumors that there were problems on set, so it is possible that Somerhalder is not the reason Dobrev made the decision to leave The Vampire Diaries. It just seems like a convenient excuse now as fans look for reasons for losing their favorite character.
An unnamed source told Hollywood Life that Somerhalder and Reed getting engaged in December solidified her decision to leave the show, but she always had the dream of pursuing bigger roles. Other sources have said the complete opposite, saying that the set was never uncomfortable. Reed has reportedly only been on set once.
Dobrev recently said that she wanted to move on. Elena’s storyline on The Vampire Diaries was only supposed to last six years for her. That was what she originally signed up for, and never had plans to continue with the character after that. She made it clear going into season six that it would be her last, giving Plec time to find the best way to write the character out of the show.
There are certainly people on set who are now worried. Dobrev leaving means that one of the three main characters will be leaving the show. The Vampire Diaries has always been about the love triangle between Stefan, Damon and Elena. However, it has since moved on and Stefan seems to have moved onto Caroline (once they both get their humanities back). It is possible that the show has moved on from its original premise so much that it could easily survive without the main female lead. Only time will tell, but Dobrev does not seem to be leaving The Vampire Diaries because of Somerhalder.
