Actress Olivia Munn will be the character Psylocke in the upcoming movie X-Men: Apocalypse. On Monday, April 13, Bryan Singer, the director of the flick, announced the casting of Munn on his Instagram account. Psylocke is a telepathic mutant who also possesses the power of telekinesis. She was first introduced in 1976, appearing in the Marvel U.K. comic book series, Captain Britain, and was Captain Britain’s sister.
Psylocke’s alter ego is Betsy Braddock in the Captain Britain comic book series. The character was created by artist Herb Trimpe and writer Chris Claremont. The character has changed over the years since her debut. Psylocke has evolved and changed over the years, like most comic book super heroes and heroines, into a character who now has both the skills and body of Kwannon, a Japanese ninja. Olivia Munn will likely need to get trained in martial arts if she is expected to convincingly play Psylocke.
Olivia Munn, who has had roles in Magic Mike and HBO’s The Newsroom, as well as last year’s Deliver Us From Evil and starring opposite Johnny Depp in Mortdecai, will not be the only new or recent cast member of the upcoming X-Men movie. Sophie Turner will play a younger version of Jean Grey, Lana Condor will be Jubilee, Nightcrawler will be played by Kodi Smit-McPhee, the role of Cyclops will be played by Tye Sheridan, Ben Hardy will portray Angel, and Alexandra Shipp will be Storm.
The villain of the flick, Apocalypse, who is also known as En Sabah Nur, will be played by Oscar Isaac. He first was seen in the role, in a brief cameo appearance, during the end-credits of X-Men: Days of Future Past.
Patrick Stewart will not be reprising his role as Professor X, and Ian McKellen will not be back as Magneto. Actors who will be returning and reprising their roles are Nicholas Hoult as Beast, James McAvoy, Rose Byrne, Hugh Jackman as Wolverine, Michael Fassbender, and Jennifer Lawrence as Mystique. The movie will reportedly be the last time that Lawrence and Hoult will be in the X-Men franchise. The veteran cast members are sure to make Olivia Munn and the other new cast members feel welcome.
Olivia Munn, as Psylocke, might not have that big of a role in X-Men: Apocalypse. Fans have speculated that she might just be introduced in the movie, scheduled to open in theaters on May 27, 2016. If so, Olivia Munn might have her character expanded upon, and she might eventually star in a movie based upon her character, like the upcoming Deadpool flick starring Ryan Reynolds and the planned movie, Gambit, starring Channing Tatum.
Deadpool is scheduled to be released in theaters on February 12, 2016, while Gambit is expected to hit theaters on October 7, 2016. Wolverine 3, which does not have an official name yet, will open on March 3, 2017. It is reportedly going to be the final time that Hugh Jackman plays Wolverine. Also, a movie called X-Force is scheduled to be released on July 13, 2018.
Even if her role is a small one, designed to introduce the character of Psylocke, Olivia Munn’s appearance in X-Men: Apocalypse is one that will likely be eagerly anticipated by fans of the actress and the X-Men franchise. The three writers of the script are Michael Dougherty, Dan Harris and Simon Kinberg.
