Golf superstar Rory McIllroy is reportedly going to be caddied by One Direction star Niall Horan, at this year’s Masters Par 3 Contest. The event will be held tomorrow, April 8, in the city-county of Augusta, Georgia.
The 21-year-old acts as the replacement of the golfer’s former caddie, Caroline Wozniack, who assisted McIllroy over the past two years as his caddie. The two were involved in a relationship from 2011-2014, and had become engaged before the Holywood native called it off, a decision he says he made upon realizing that the commitments of marriage were in no way what he was ready for at this time of his life. Wozniack says that the termination of the couple’s relationship was done through a brief phone call, following which time the athlete has not initiated any kind of contact. The split occurred last summer.
Regarding Horan’s involvement in this year’s Master 3 Contest, the Irish sportsman has given the statement that the Night Changes singer is very excited to attend the event, as he has never been a part of the Masters until this point. The two are both Irish (McIllroy is from County Down, Northern Ireland, and Horan from Mullingar, Republic of Ireland.) Their friendship reportedly began a few years ago, and at the end of last year the golfer told the One Direction heart-throb that he would be more than welcome to carry the bag in this year’s Masters Par 3, should he be available at the time.
Horan’s schedule has been non-stop for the past 2 months, One Direction’s world tour (On The Road Again) having begun on February 7. This tour consists of 80 shows in 19 countries, and the now foursome (Zayn Malik exited the group for good on March 25, following their show in Jakarta, Indonesia) just wrapped up their last show for the next two months. This event took place on April 4 in Dubai, UAE. Their next performance is on June 5, and takes place in Cardiff, Wales. This two month break gives the remaining boys a chance to refresh and recharge before having to get back into the swing of things, and Horan has used this time to participate in one of his favorite sports and assist McIllroy in this year’s Masters Par 3 Contest.
McIllroy is an extremely accomplished golfer. He has a fair amount of both amateur and professional wins; the amateur achievements include the 2005 and 2006 West of Ireland Championship & Irish Close Championship, and the 2006 European Amateur Championship. His professional wins include nine PGA Tour wins (four Major championships, 1 World Golf Championship, two FedEx Cup playoff events, and two other triumphs.) The athlete has caused some controversy on numerous occasions, raising something of a media storm over the past six years (once in 2009, three times in 2011, and once in 2013, 2014, and 2015. The most recent reason behind this relates to an incident that took place last month, in which McIllroy threw one of his clubs into the water at the WGC-Cadillac Championship after becoming frustrated with himself for hitting his ball into the water on the part-5 eighth hole.
The 2015 Masters Par 3 Contest will air from 5pm-7pm PDT. It will be broadcast on TSN.
